Op naar het Noorden: Chang Mai, Pai en Mae Hong Son
Na de watjes te hebben gezien in Sukhotai (Wat? Wat staat voor tempel in het Thais) stapten we in de bus naar Changmai. We hadden nog een alternatieve route besproken maar gingen uiteindelijk voor all the way naar Mae Hong Son. Ook dit keer weer werden we met een tot dan onbekend gevaarte naar het station gebracht. Creatieve lui hier hoor, ongelooflijk hoeveel verschillende soorten voertuigen we hier al hebben zien rijden! Hier even een overzichtje.. (nog beperkt gehouden, moet je je voorstellen!).
Voordat we de bus in konden moesten we nog even opstaan voor het nationale volkslied. Patriotisme viert hier hoogtij. Het meegalmen hebben we dit keer achterwege gelaten. Na dit altijd enerverende moment werd Martijn uitgemaakt voor “monkey” (vanwege zijn behaarde benen) door een Thaise vrouw die op het station werkte. Martijn wist nog niet precies hoe je in het Thais zegt: Nee, jij trekt volle zalen :-), dus hij lachte maar mee. De bus was van binnen weer voorzien van de mooiste kleurtjes en gelukkig hadden we twee zitplaatsen. De rit duurde vijf uur en vanuit Changmai wilde we de bus naar Mae hong Son nemen. Omdat deze rit acht uur zou gaan duren (iets teveel van het goede) besloten we om naar Pai te gaan een stadje halverwege op de route van Changmai naar Mae hong Son. De bus die ons naar Pai bracht was erg oud en ging langzaam door de gebergte heen waardoor we de mooiste uitzichten konden bekijken. We zaten samen met nog een Fin en een Thai op de achterste stoelen boven de motor. Die naargelang de rit vorderde steeds heter zou gaan worden. Gelukkig hadden we van te voren een kamer gereserveerd bij golden huts bungalows want het scheen heel erg druk te zijn. Dit komt omdat ook veel Thai naar het noorden trekken om het nieuwe jaar te vieren. Eenmaal aangekomen bleek het echt een gezellig stadje te zijn. Niet veel westerse toeristen, mooie vergezichten en leuke restaurants en bars. Maar wat koud! Echt lange mouwen en broeken weer. Je kan merken dat je hier in het noorden van Thailand bent beland want in Changmai was het nog 28 graden.
Na ons gemeld te hebben bij de baas van de golden huts resorts hebben we de sleutel van de bungalow gekregen en hebben we onze spullen gedropt en wat warms aangetrokken. Na wat met Jonas (de Fin) te hebben gedronken en gegeten zijn we gaan slapen. Die volgende ochtend werden we heerlijk wakker. Wat een lekker bed en kussens en wat een supermooi uitzicht! Carolien was nog maar net vijf minuten wakker en had het fototoestel al weer te pakken.
We vonden het echt jammer dat we hier maar een nacht konden blijven omdat alles voor de komende dagen al was volgeboekt. Het was nog koud die ochtend en dus zaten we dik aangekleed aan ons ontbijt. Tijdens het ontbijt hadden we definitief besloten om door te gaan naar Mae hong Son (de streek die bekend staat als het Zwitserland van Thailand) aangezien in Pai alles vol zat. Twee uur later zaten we weer in de geweldige bus met de plaatselijke locals richting Mae hong Son. Een berg hier en daar gevolgd door de mooiste slingerbochten. Gelaten ondergingen we de rit…
Onze eerste indruk was dat Pai een stuk gezelliger en pitoresker is dan Mae hong Son. MHS oogt toch wat stadser. Die avond hebben we over de night market gelopen en hebben we diverse hapjes geprobeerd.
Onze honger was nog niet helemaal gestild en hebben we nog bij een Thaise Italiaan pizza en pasta gegeten. Met volle maag zijn we op ons zelf gefabriceerde boxsprings, twee matrassen op elkaar, in slaap gevallen..

jammer dat de verbinding net slecht was op skype , maar deze verhalen maken weer veel goed.
Wat een vervoersmiddelen… kan me voorstellen dat het lachwekkend overkomt daar. Ze zien er wel allemaal vrolijk uit van kleur (daar is over na gedacht)
Net zoals het kind wat veilig ligt te slapen…. je moet er maar op komen (wist niet dat ze zo groot te koop waren)

Die vervoersmiddelen zijn echt ongelovelijk, ze zijn inderdaad erg goed in creaties.
Wat ik me afvraag: hoe weet je welke bus je moet nemen naar een bepaalde plaats? Ik zie namelijk op die foto’s alles in het Chinees op die bus staan.
