Happy 2551!
Na een tweede busreis van 4 uur in te volle bus met te krappe bankjes (Thaise maten) kwamen we blij maar vermoeid aan in Mae hong son. De eerste indruk was dat het minder gezellig en knus was dan Pai. Een behoorlijk grote stad gelegen in een vallei. Gelukkig konden we daar gauw op terugkomen. Terwijl we in Pai op de bus aan het wachten waren raakten we aan de praat met een vrolijke Francaise: Dorothy (31, woont al 8 jaar in Londen en probeert deze reis te beslissen waar ze nu zal gaan wonen, werkt in de mode). De geplande route kwam aardig met die van ons overeen en zij zou ook nieuwjaar gaan vieren in Mae Hong Son. Een week geleden had ze de Fransman met Spaanse (baskenland) roots Xavier (37, timmerman) ontmoet en ze konden het goed met elkaar vinden. Daarom trokken ze sindsdien met elkaar verder. Xavier sprak nog niet zoveel Engels maar probeerde daar alles aan te doen en gebruikte Dorothy daarbij vaak als lopend woordenboek. Bij het busstation aangekomen gingen ze op zoek naar een slaapplaats en wij liepen richting het guesthouse waar we per telefoon een slaapplaats hadden geregeld. Het bleek dat iemand die een kamer met badkamer had gereserveerd niet was komen opdagen dus mochten wij die kamer betrekken. Prima!
We maakten van de twee twee-persoonsmatrassen die er op de grond lagen een boxspring en gingen even rondlopen en wat eten en drinken. Het guesthouse lag aan een pittoresk meertje dat het handelscentrum van het stadje vormde. We zaten net wat te drinken bij de bar lakeview (toepasselijk) toen Dorothy en Xavier met de tassen nog op langs kwamen lopen. Ze hadden nog geen kamer kunnen vinden. Alles zat vol in verband met de Thaise vakantiedagen.
Dat er ontzettend veel Thaise toeristen waren was in Pai al opgevallen maar daar waren ook nog een hoop westerlingen. In deze stad was dat niet zo en waren we duidelijkheid in de minderheid. ’s Middags was het stadje een dooie boel maar in de loop van de avond werd het drukker en drukker. Er was een avondmarkt rond het meer, waar je allerlei lekkernijen kon eten en souvenirs kon kopen.
Zondag 30 december
Al het reizen van de afgelopen tijd met voornamelijk de bus en een combinatie van slecht slapen laat toch een bepaalde vermoeidheid achter bij ons twee. Daarom hadden we besloten om de tweede dag een chilldag te houden met uitslapen, lezen en internetten. Om zes uur s’ochtends hoorde we onze buurman luidkeels galmen. Het was een haan! Waarschijnlijk had hij een tik van de molen gehad want hij kraaide lekker door tot een uur of half negen. Niet erg uitgerust werden we wakker en zijn we al snel op zoek gegaan naar een lekkere ontbijtplek. Ons guesthouse genaamd friend house zit aan een klein rond meer en hier zijn we omheen gelopen. Aan het einde van dit meer zat een koffiehuis verschuilt achter veel groen. Carolien ontdekte de spot en we kwamen er al snel achter dat ze versgemalen koffie serveerden en ook lekkere koeken. Dat maakte de ochtend weer helemaal goed! Met een grote smile zaten we aan de cappucino, chocolade brownie en blueberry cheesecake met een heerlijk muziekje op de achtergrond.
Hierna even gezellig geskyped met thuis en een biertje gedronken. Aangezien we alleen nog maar een koffie en wat taart op hadden hakte dat er aardig in. Dus daarna maar even de markt op om lekker te eten. We hadden al eerder gezien dat er heerlijke hele vissen op de BBQ’s lagen te bakken en het water liep ons in de mond. Achter de BBQ’s stonden allemaal tafeltjes om het meer waar je na je verzamelde maaltje lekker op kon eten. Achter de vis waar wij zo verlekkerd naar keken stond ook zo’n tafeltje en laten Dorothy en Xavier daar nou net lekker zitten te eten! Ze hadden gelukkig een slaapplaats gevonden al was het wel 20 km verderop bij een homestay, een Thaise familie thuis. Waar ze al vroeg in de morgen aan de Thaise whisky gingen, ongelooflijk gepeperd maar heerlijk eten kregen en verse rijst met cocosmelk uit een bamboestok van de BBQ. Een hele ervaring dus.
Uiteindelijk besloten we bij hen aan te schuiven. De vis was heerlijk en de avond gezellig. Na het eten (en een dronken tourist guide die ons wel wilde leren hoe we moesten overleven in de bergen, vuur maken enzo en vervolgens zelf bijna in de BBQ viel) zetten we voet naar een tattooshop. Schrik niet Martijn wilde niet opeens I love mama op zijn arm laten zetten (al denkt ie daar natuurlijk wel eens aan) maar deze Thai had de Franzosen aan hun slaapplaats geholpen en je kon er ook wat drinken. Daar ontdekte Carolien het drankje Spy (gemaakt voor echte 007’s). Een lekker wijnfrisje met 5% alcohol. Hmmmm een goed idee voor nieuwjaar. Na een paar drankje en veel gepraat gingen we lekker slapen. We spraken niks af maar zouden elkaar vast tegenkomen op de laatste dag van het jaar.
Maandag 31 december
Een beetje op tijd opgestaan (8:00) en na een heerlijke warme douche (zo eentje waar je jezelf bijna niet onder vandaan krijgt) lekker ontbeten met een pot thee en scrambled eggs. Daar konden we even mee vooruit. Daarna een 125 cc semi-automatische ‘brommer’ gehuurd. Omdat we niet eerder op een handmatig schakelende brommer hadden gereden deden we allebei eerst even een testritje. Toen we het allebei onder de knie hadden vertrokken we met Carolien aan het stuur. Martijn lette op de route en Carolien op het verkeer.
Langs de heuvels en bergen omhoog was andere koek en Carolien moest af en toe terugschakelen om de berg op te komen. We kwamen onderweg de mooiste uitzichten tegen: rijstvelden, bergen en mooie dorpjes. We tuften ondertussen lekker door naar de waterval en niet lang daarna kwamen we aan. Hier waren geen westerse maar juist veel thaise toeristen op afgekomen en zij gingen met hun camera allemaal op dezelfde plek staan om de waterval te bewonderen en er foto’s van te maken. Hij was erg mooi dus dat begrepen we wel. Na wat rond gekeken te hebben zagen we een bergpad langs de waterval naar beneden lopen, nieuwsgierig als we zijn liepen we deze af naar beneden. Hier was verder niemand maar dezelfde waterval kwam in kleinere watervallen naar beneden met prachtig helder water in een ferme stroming. We maakten wat mooie foto’s en filmpjes en gingen weer terug de weg op. Dit keer nam Martijn het stuur en gingen we op weg naar de Mud Spa Phu Khlong die we onderweg waren tegengekomen. Daar bleek het nog meer van de Thaise toeristen te wemelen dan bij de waterval. Overal dikke bakken en mensen met moddermaskers op hun gezicht. We liepen even naar de heetwaterbron (70 graden) waar de bubbeltjes omhoog kwamen borrelen. Natuurlijk even voelen aan het water (auw) en lezen over de bijzondere mineralen in de modder die op maar zo weinig plekken op de wereld te vinden zijn. Carolien was enthousiast geraakt en ging voor een moddermasker van ongeveer 1,50 euro. Dit was behoorlijk lopende band werk, eerst gezicht schoonmaken, dan op de stoel, modder erop met een kwast en hup drogen, droog? Dan afspoelen met het bronwater dat al warm uit de kraan kwam. Daarna langs een mannetje dat klaarstond met een tube met lekkere cremige reiniger om de laatste restje er af te halen. Uiteindelijk was er een andere meneer die (een soort?) water over je gezicht sprayde en daarna kritisch met een lampje naar je huid keek en vervolgens nogmaals spoot. Nu was hij tevreden en mocht ik gaan kijken naar het resultaat: veel stralendere huid (volgens deze meneer dan)! Tijd om weer op te stappen.
We wilden graag de zon van deze laatste dag onder zien gaan op een speciale plek: op een berg naast het dorp. Daar aangekomen bleek het al vol te staan met auto’s. We zagen een koffietentje met ontzettend mooi uitzicht waar (verrassend genoeg)nog niemand zat en namen de beste plekken. We bestelden een lekkere ijscappucino en genoten van het uitzicht. Je had een prachtig zicht over de bergen en een dorpje dat in een vallei ernaast lag. Toen de zon bijna achter de bergen verdween en de lucht een steeds warmere gloed kreeg waren we niet de enigen meer maar stond er een heel bataljon fotografen. Uiteraard deden we niet voor hen onder en hebben we een aantal prachtige plaatjes geschoten.
Hierna liepen we naar de tempel waar ook van die witte zakken verkocht werden die hier in grote getallen de lucht in worden gelaten. Het in een grote witte zak van heel dun papier die je op de kop houdt. Aan de onderkant zit een stalen cirkel met een kruis in het midden. Aan dit kruis zit een brandbaar iets(vergelijkbaar met aanmaakblokken voor de openhaard).. Dit steek je aan en door de warme lucht die de ballon dan vult (die lichter is dan koude lucht) stijgt hij uiteindelijk vanzelf op. Dit was duidelijk een familie of vrienden aangelegenheid want je zag mensen dit veel met elkaar doen. De kunst was de ballon niet te vroeg los te laten zodat deze naar beneden ging maar omhoog. Je hield hem met z’n allen net zolang vast totdat iemand het teken gaf dat hij kon. Als hij dan opsteeg klapte iedereen en keer hem na. Wij besloten dit ook samen te doen. Daarbij vroegen we een familie om foto’s van ons te maken (wat ze veelvuldig deden tot plezier van Carolien). Het was op zich een succes (hij steeg op) maar het brandbare deel bevatte een soort kaarsvet wat er vanaf druppelde en waarvoor iedereen aan de kant moest. Uiteindelijk terug in het guesthouse een beetje opgetut (toch een feestje) en daarna rond het meer gelopen.
Hier waren al heel wat festiviteiten aan de gang. Toen we de brommer hadden teruggebracht kwamen er allemaal bergvolkeren langslopen in een grote stoet. Deze waren nu aan het optreden op het podium. We liepen verder langs de markt met alle lekkernijen en namen plaats in een druk restaurant. Hier hebben we heerlijk gegeten en diepe gesprekken gevoerd. Toch een gek idee dat we meer dan de helft van dit jaar reizend zullen spenderen. Daarna was het tijd om lekker over de markt te struinen en wat te drinken. Uiteindelijk kochten we een mooie bedsprei en toen we deze even in het guesthouse wilden leggen kwamen we (jahoor!) Dorothy en Xavier tegen. We gingen lekker kletsen en wat drinken in de Chilli bar. Er werd pool gespeeld en live muziek gemaakt. Toen het bijna 00:00 was liepen we richting het meer met onze drankjes. Al gauw brak het vuurwerk en gejuich los en konden we toasten op het nieuwe jaar. We maakten mooie foto’s en gave filmpjes van de knallen. Daarna nog wat gedronken in de chilli bar en redelijk op tijd naar bed want wilden de bus van 6:00 pakken…
