Changmai: De zoektocht naar een souvenir..
Uiteindelijk wilden we toch liever de minibus van 8:00 pakken ipv de bus van 6:00 dus konden we er om 6:00 uit. Meteen smsen naar het thuisfront waar op dat moment het vuurwerk losbarstte. Er was niks open waar we konden ontbijten. Uiteindelijk vonden we wat en bestelden we twee rijstsoepjes. Martijn liep alvast even naar het station. Het bleek dat je voor de minibus had moeten reserveren. Balen! Dus toch de gewone bus om 8:30. De rijstsoep was inmiddels gebracht en die leek meer op warme behanglijm dan een echte rijstsoep zoals we die gewend zijn: helder met groenten, rijstkorrels en kip. Carolien had voorzichtig wat hapjes genomen en kon niet zeggen dat ze genoot, Martijn besloot meteen bij het zien van de drab dat hij dat niet ging eten. Er kwam een grotere bus aan dan verwacht. Dit bleek de bus naar Mae Sariang te zijn en we besloten deze te nemen. De bus zat niet vol (voor de verandering) maar daar kwam onderweg al gauw verandering in. De chauffeur had ongelooflijke Thaise muziek opstaan en reed erg ongemakkelijk hard door bochten heen. Ondanks dat we erg moe waren lukte het ons dan ook niet om te slapen. We waren blij dat we in Mae Sariang konden uitstappen. Daar stond een enorme hoeveelheid mensen ook op de bus te wachten. Zodra we de bus uit waren werden we aangesproken door een Thai die vroeg of we zijn guesthouse wilden proberen. We wilden best een kijkje nemen. Het bleek prima en de man heette Aekassan. We bleven, eerst eten en daarna slapen. We waren afgepeigerd. Na het slapen wilden we graag zwemmen maar het zwembad was een tegenvaller dus liepen we terug. Internet gebruikt en gegeten en weer eens een keer op tijd naar bed.
Woensdag 2 januari
De volgende dag de bus naar Chiang Mai gepakt. Het was weer dringen geblazen. De eerste bus die arriveerde in Mai Sariang was te vol om reizigers mee te nemen en de tweede bus had nog maar een zitplaats. Galant als martijn is heeft hij carolien deze plaats aangeboden en heeft martijn 2 en een half uur met zn hoofd gebogen tegen het dak aan gestaan :-). Gelukkig had hij voor zn verjaardag een ipod gekregen (waarvoor nogmaals dank gasten), zodat het leed kon worden verzacht. Met queen, the streets en de audio bullys ging de busreis toch nog voorspoedig. In de bus zelf hadden we het eagle guesthouse gebeld om een kamer te reserveren en ons op te pikken bij het busstation van Changmai. Gelukkig werden we inderdaad snel opgepikt na aankomst en vervolgens hebben we onze spullen gedropt in onze kamer. Gedurende ons verblijf in Thailand hadden we ons voorgenomen om van elk land een mooi souvenir te kopen om naar huis te sturen. Helaas hadden we nog niet iets gezien wat we allebei de moeite waard vonden om naar huis te sturen. Chang mai stond dus in het teken van HET SOUVENIR. Altijd mooi om een doel te hebben :-). Die avond zijn we op de nightmarket wat gaan struinen en zagen we dezelfde artikelen die we overal zagen: namaak horloges, schoenen, t-shirts en zijde producten. Niet erg interresant dus.
Totdat we bij een bazaar naar binnen liepen. Carolien haar oog viel op een hevig versierde bloemenvaas. Na het bewonderen van de vaas zijn we naar binnen gelopen om te vragen wat zoiets moois nu kost: 40.000 baht (800 euro).
Nu was de verkoper een Pakistaan/ Indier en uit ervaring weten we dat bij deze handelaren er meer dan de helft afgepraat kan worden. Maar goed, stel dat dat lukt dan is het evengoed nog een fiks bedrag en niet geheel in lijn met onze budget reis. We besloten er een nachtje over te gaan slapen..
Donderdag 3 januari
“Ik heb er over nagedacht en ik wil een bod uitbrengen op de vaas” was het eerste wat Carolien zei deze dag. Na wat vroege ochtend overleg onder het genot van een organic breakfast (lees: lekkere kaneelpannekoeken en een pot thee) besloten we maximaal 8000 baht (160 euro) voor de vaas te willen betalen. Inmiddels was onze geheugenkaart van ons fototoestel weer aardig gevol en besloten we deze te branden op de dvd. Helaas ging er bij het bewerken van de geheugenkaart iets mis waardoor we de gemaakte foto’s en filmpjes van Mae Hong Song (nieuwjaar!!) niet meer kunnen raadplegen. Dit heeft ons de hele ochtend tevergeefs bezig gehouden. Erg jammer maar het is niet anders. We hopen dat Aaron nog wonderen kan verrichten.. Toen was het tijd voor iets waar Martijn over had nagedacht: tandje twee over de schedel heen. Zie hier het resultaat:
Aan het begin van de middag zijn we langzaam richting de nightmarket gegaan, eerst nog even bij starbucks een lekkere bak gedronken waar we onze strategie voor het aankopen van de vaas doornamen: Martijn deed zijn bril af (blijft dolce gabanna) en de digitale camera ging de tas in, je voelt het al onze strategie was om de arme student te spelen. Uiteindelijk ging Carolien naar de zaak en Martijn ging daar dichtbij een logistics/ mailbedrijf in om te vragen wat de kosten zijn om een dergelijke vaas te verzenden naar Nederland. Carolien stond binnen no time weer naast Martijn want de zaak met de vaas was nog gesloten. De man van het mailbedrijf legde ons uit dat alles in deze markt, ook de vaas in kwestie, veel te duur zijn en dat je beter dicht bij de bron kan shoppen. Dit bleek de Ban Tawai woodcarfing en handicraft center te zijn. Goed, plannen gewijzigd wij zouden de volgende dag naar deze markt gaan. Na meneer hevig bedankt te hebben zijn we onze weg vervolgd en hebben we bij de Burger King even een fastfood menu tot ons genomen! Dat was wel even smullen! Inmiddels was het al avond en zijn we richting onze geusthouse gegaan.
Vrijdag 4 januari
Netjes onze wekker gezet en fris een ontbijt gepakt bij onze organische broeders aan de overkant van de straat. Na onze magen te hebben gevuld zijn we een songthaew in gesprongen (lees: pick up met ingebouwde bankjes en overkapping) en werden we naar het handicraft centre gebracht. Na ongeveer 25 km werden we afgezet en zagen we dat er weinig westerlingen waren, een goed teken. Voor de dames: hemels! Nog nooit zoveel interieur zaken bij elkaar gezien met zulke mooie spullen. Na wat rondgewandeld te hebben kwamen we bij een kleine winkel die wel heel aparte lampen verkocht, zoiets hadden we nog nooit gezien. We waren behoorlijk onder de indruk en inventariseerde gelijk de prijs en het gewicht. Die vielen heel erg mee dus we onthielden deze en struinden verder. De markt was enorm en wat te krijgen was heel divers, om hebberig van te worden. Mocht je ooit een herinrichting van je huis of tuin overwegen, dan is dit de plaats om met veel thuis te komen voor weinig. En je hebt meteen een mooie vakantie ook.
Uiteindelijk besloten tijdens de lunch dat de lampen echt het meest speciaal van allemaal waren en dat we wellicht nog wat houtsnijwerk mooi vonden om mee te sturen.
Na goede onderhandelingen konden we de lampen voor 40 euro meenemen, nog wat mooi houtsnijwerk erbij voor 10 euro en het pakketje kon per post verstuurd worden. Het versturen kost hetzelfde als alle inkopen bij elkaar maar is het absoluut waard. De eigenaar was zo aardig om ons weer terug te brengen naar het centrum van Chang Mai, ze moest namelijk naar de stad om hondenvoer voor haar twee sint bernards te kopen. In de auto kletsten we over een vriend van haar die van plan was om zich in de VS in de Thai Town van LA te vestigen en hoe ze deze maar niet kon overtuigen niet te gaan. Ook hadden we het over reizen, waar ze van hield maar niet meer dan 10 dagen en dan in de buurt (bijv. Vietnam) omdat het anders veel te duur wordt. Al met al een interessant kijkje in het leven van deze Thaise. Met een souvenir “op zak” hebben we tevreden wat gegeten en gedronken bij een vegetarische tent en zijn we richting het guesthouse gegaan.
Zaterdag 5 januari
Op tijd opgestaan en na een lekker ontbijtje bij onze organische vrienden met de songthaew naar het station. De bus ging pas om elf uur dus even lekker een kopje koffie gedronken. Daar spotten we een monnik en het was ons al eerder opgevallen dat deze roken, mobiel bellen en soms de hipste schoenen dragen maar deze had ook nog een nike petje op en dronk energydrink, dat moesten we even vastleggen. De bus was weer een superveilige met gordels en hamers. Zeer luxe met leren stoelen en zelfs een hostess die water en lekkernijen langsbracht. Alleen de vering was erg stug (zie filmpje op de filmpagina).
De rit was maar 3 uur en 20 minuten dus toen we in Chang Rai aankwamen waren we zo fris dat we eigenlijk wel meteen door konden naar de grensplaats met Laos: Chang Khong. Deze rit duurde maar 2 uur en we werden enthusiast binnengehaald. We waren de enige toeristen en praatten met handen en voeten en gebrekkig Engels met elkaar.
Het uitzicht uit de bus was echt prachtig (met rijstvelden en bergen) en het rook heerlijk naar sinaassappelbomen en riet. Eenmaal bij het hostel aangekomen gooiden we onze spullen neer en aten ons diner terwijl de zon langzaam ondergaand over de rivier scheen. Met als toetje een werkelijk heerlijke chocoladetaart zie de foto’s!
Aan de overkant van de rivier ligt Laos en we zullen deze morgen oversteken om aan de andere kant op de slow boat te stappen naar Luang Prabang in het midden van Laos. De boot doet er 2 dagen over en vaart 6 uur per dag. De tussenliggende nacht slapen we in een guesthouse aan wal. De plannen voor Laos zijn dat we na Luang Prabang niet zoals iedereen richting de hoofdstad Vientiane gaan maar het noorden. Dit moet echt prachtig zijn en we hebben ongelooflijk veel zin om dit land te ontdekken.

Begin ik meteen van alles weer verkeerd te schrijven. Ik zit hier natuurlijk OEH AAH, OOOHHH!!!

Jeetje Tinus, ik snap nu de opmerking van ijdelheid een paar post geleden, je hebt het jezelf wel heel erg gemakkelijk gemaakt met dat kapsel.
Laat ik zeggen dat ik het apart vindt, dan snap je heel goed wat ik bedoel.
Hebben jullie een paarse lamp gekocht? Of was het gewoon een voorbeeld? Ze zijn idd erg leuk, ook als ie brand. Als je op de foto die witte ziet branden. Goed gedaan hoor.
Van de chocoladetaart ga je bijna kwijlen, lekker hoor.
Ik ben nu met jullie aan het skypen dus stop mijn verhaal en ga verder met jullie kletsen, dat is veel leuker natuurlijk.
