Woensdag 9 januari
Dit keer hebben we met een heerlijk scandinavisch ontbijt de dag begroet, dat wil zeggen een dikke hamburger met patat voor Carolien en een scrambled eggs menu met bagels, jus en koffie voor Martijn (weinig scandinavisch aan maar zo heet de bakkerij). Onze bootvrienden Raphael en Andreas kwamen wat later na een telefoontje met een paar Aussie’s een Fransman en een Engelse meid opdagen. Even kennismaken en ontbijten. Raphi ging ondertussen een songthaew regelen voor een goede prijs, hij bleek inderdaad een goede onderhandelaar want we konden even later voor 25.000 kip (2 euro) heen en weer naar de waterval. Eerst nog even stoppen bij de baquette stalletjes (het enige koloniale herkenningspunt naast de huizen wat hier is overgebleven van de Fransen) om een supergroot belegde baquette te scoren voor de lunch. Heerlijk! Ook hier even groepskorting onderhandeld. Voor het park betaal je twee keer zoveel entree als de locals, een beetje jammer vinden we dat. We probeerden op allerlei manieren korting te krijgen: groepskorting? Nee. Studentenkorting? Nee. Zelfs de zus van Raphael die al 3 weken in Laos woont om olifanten te helpen kon hem niet overtuigen dat ze hier woonde: ”I never seen you..”
We konden de waterval bereiken via een beren- en tijgerrescue center. De aziatische beer was vollop vertegenwoordigd en ze werden net gevoerd. Mooie, klimgrage beesten, kleiner dan je verwacht. Voor de tijger moesten we even omlopen. Maar daar lag ze, heerlijk lui te zijn op de rug met de pootjes over elkaar tegen een boom. Vlak naast het hek. Dit hebben we natuurlijk even vastgelegd zo vaak zie je deze mooie beesten niet van zo dichtbij. En wat een klauwen!
We hebben de waterval eerst beklommen om een mooi uitzicht te krijgen over de omgeving en de waterval zelf. Echt zo mooi! We zijn nog geen andere plek tegengekomen die dit verslaat! Maar goed we hebben Nieuw Zeeland dan nog in het vooruitzicht 
!
De waterval was echt vet! Doordat de waterval meerdere niveaus heeft zijn er natuurlijke tropische zwembaden ontstaan waarin het water een mooie turqouise kleur heeft. In tegenstelling tot wat de benaming tropisch doet vermoeden was de temperatuur iets van 10 graden (brrr..bibbers!) maar wel lekker verfrissend. Nadat Martijn een aantal keer soepeltjes als een echte Tarzan met een touw het water in was geslingerd liepen we verder naar een swimming area waar je beter kon zonnebaden. Onze goede daad van de dag was het redden van een libelle van een zekere verdrinkingsdood.
Toen we uitgezwommen en -kleigevochten waren zetten we weer voet richting de songthaew. Die had de hele tijd staan wachten bij een mini-dorpje aan kraampjes en restaurantjes wat bij de ingang is ontstaan. Eenmaal terug ging iedereen zijn eigen weg en gingen wij een heuvel op om de zonsondergang te bekijken. Als je helemaal de heuvel op wilde moest je weer 2 euro entree betalen p.p. Dus dat hielden we voor gezien. Evengoed genoten van het prachtige uitzicht dat we daar hadden. Na een lange, warme douche hadden we trek gekregen en gingen we naar een restaurant waar je volgens een van onze guidebooks geweest moest zijn: Indochina spirit. We zijn blij dat we gegaan zijn, alles was heerlijk! Ontzettend genoten, zelfs van het live ‘bandje’ die Lao muziek maakte. Daarna nog even de stad in om twee prachtige schilderstukken te kopen (nu onderweg naar huis), te mailen en te kijken of we reacties op de site hadden. Altijd superleuk om te lezen. We waren eigenlijk wel op na deze dag en gingen vroeg naar bed. Donderdag 10 januariDe dag begonnen met lekker uitslapen en daarna een gedeelde baquette op straat. Daarna een nieuwe simkaart aangeschaft van het merk Tigo. Het leuke is dat je daarbij kan kiezen wat mensen horen als ze je bellen ipv de gebruikelijke ‘ring-ring’. Hier hadden wij nog nooit van gehoord en we gaan het ook maar niet instellen (al is het wel cool dat je de laatste Lao hits kan laten horen) want het kost vast weer een hoop centen en die smsen we er liever doorheen. Toen we aan lekkere koffie met olifantenoor (nee geen echte natuurlijk maar een lekkernij met kaneel en suiker) zaten bij de scandinavische bakkerij, kwamen Raphael en Andreas samen met de zus van Raphael en de Engelse meid (waarvan we de naam nog niet weten) langslopen. Heel leuk, net een dorp waar je iedereen kent. We komen overal mensen van de boot tegen waar je dan even een praatje mee maakt. Ze zouden het olifantencentrum waar de zus vrijwilligerswerk doet gaan bezoeken maar hoorden op het laatste moment dat ze geen korting kregen en 50 dollar moesten betalen. Daarom hadden ze besloten het niet te doen. Ze hadden in plaats daarvan geshopt in een naastgelegen dorpje. We vertelden over onze plannen om morgen naar Luang nam tha af te reizen (9 uur met de bus, ticket al gekocht) en misschien zien we elkaar vanavond dan voor de laatste keer, gek idee. De koffie kwam met een gratis refill en om een idee te krijgen over de kwaliteit en sterkte van de Laokoffie: Carolien kwam 2 kilo lichter terug van de wc. Tsja en Martijn had diezelfde koffie ook gedronken dus dan weet je het wel. Goed spul (geen acht scheppen zonder kop per volle pot koffie Truus !) en buiten Laos vrijwel niet te krijgen. Hierna vertrokken we richting hetzelfde dorpje. Toen we er eindelijk aankwamen bleek dat we een ontzettend eind om hadden gelopen. Daardoor hebben we wel weer mooie dingen gezien. Tientallen middelbare scholieren op fietsen en brommers die blijkbaar terugkwamen van de middagpauze. De dames al lipgloss bijwerkend en met kleine parasollen in de hand. Prachtige vlinders, oude vrachtwagens, mensen die met de hand bakstenen aan het maken waren. Hup cement in een vorm, langzaam uit de vorm halen en laten uitharden in de zon. In het dorpje Baan (letterlijk: dorp) Xan Khong stuiten we meteen op twee dames die van planten/bomen papier aan het maken waren en ze gaven ons graag een demonstratie. Van het papier werden uiteindelijk tasjes gemaakt en daar worden de meeste souvenirs in verkocht. We kochten in het winkeltje een mooie zijden sjawl voor Carolien en later in een ander winkeltje nog wat cadeautjes voor thuis. Daarna via de veel kortere route terug. Toen we de snelstromende rivier overstaken waren kinderen lekker in het water aan het spelen. Ze sprongen van een rots in de snelle stroming om een stukje meegesleurd te worden en er dan weer uit te zwemmen en gilden het uit van plezier. We liepen terug naar het guesthouse om de tekeningen op te halen zodat we de hele boel in een keer konden versturen. Onderweg kwamen we langs een stuk dat we nog niet hadden gezien en het was genieten! De school met boven- en onderbouw en een hele luxe straat met allemaal dure winkeltjes, cafeetjes en guesthouses waar allemaal krasse knarren hun geld zaten uit te geven (geen backpackers hier). Zelfs prachtige Mercedes old timers naast kapitale panden. Duidelijk de goudkust van Luang Prabang. We liepen gauw door. Eenmaal bij het postkantoor aangekomen gingen we minstens 30 jaar terug in de tijd. Eerst de spullen inpakken (dit werd voor ons gedaan aan een oude houten inpaktafel), door een guitige kerel die ook een groet in het Lao op de kaart wilde schrijven. Nadat we overal de adressen en inhoud op hadden vermeld en de guitige kerel was vervangen door een zuchtend en steunend exemplaar die klaagde dat het zo druk was (echte ambtenaar), mochten we door naar de pakketverzendbalie. Daar werd alles gewogen en bestikkerd en konden we kiezen voor sea mail of par avion (alles staat er in het Frans). Na de prijs voor avion te hebben gezien kozen we gauw voor via le mare. Na dit postkantooravontuur kreeg Carolien hongerklap en die ging naarstig op zoek naar eten (bij voorkeur mandarijnen). Dit bleek echter nog niet zo makkelijk en uiteindelijk kwam ze terug met 2 bananen en een zak chips. Met gestilde honger gingen we even relaxen en dit stukje schrijven in de villa. Daarna weer heerlijk gesmikkeld bij indochina spirit en geskyped met opa, Hanneke, Truus en Stephan. Toen we eigenlijk op het punt stonden nog een kop thee te drinken voor het slapen gaan kwamen we nog iemand tegen van de boot. Tijdens het kletsen werd Carolien gebeld door Raphael, of we zin hadden ‘to make party’. Dat vond Carolien wel een aanlokkelijk idee, de dag ervoor zouden we misschien ook gaan maar dat ging toen niet door. Martijn twijfelde nog we moesten tenslotte de dag erop om 8 uur gepikt en gedreven klaar staan voor de 9 uur(!) durende busreis…Uiteindelijk besloten om natuurlijk wel te gaan, wanneer ga je nou stappen in Laos? Zeker als alles om 23:30 dicht gaat. Het was al 22:30 dus we brachten gauw de tas weg en pakten de tuktuk naar Dou Fa, de disco. Daar aangekomen bleek er nog weinig party gemaakt te worden. Iedereen zat aan tafeltjes naar te harde hiphop muziek te luisteren. Raphael en consorten waren ook nergens te bekennen. Na belletjes en een smsje kregen we hem te pakken. Ze zaten aan de overkant bij een lokaal tentje omdat het bier te duur was in de club. We werden groots onthaald en namen ook gauw een Laobeer. Iedereen was al flink in de stemming en er werden echte kippenklauwen besteld waar iedereen uiteraard een hapje van moest nemen. Het was een gemengd gezelschap, Zweedse dames (Michelle en ?), een Australische (Rachel), de Engelse meid (Izzie weten we nu), een Spanjaard (David) en het dynamische duo uit Zwisterland en Duitsland. Na een paar beerlao’s gingen we nog even voor het laatste half uur naar de club. Ondertussen stond iedereen op de dansvloer en ontmoeten we ook de Franse acrobaat van de boot. Er werd dancemuziek gedraaid en de DJ dame praatte af en toe door de muziek heen alsof ze een radio dj was.
Om 24:00 ging het laatste nummer op en trok de dj alvast haar jas aan terwijl ze haar laatste woorden door de microfoon sprak. De tent was al snel leeg. Wij volgden en bleken uiteindelijk met 12 falang (nog wat Australische lads erbij) over te zijn. Dus een tuktuk regelen want het feest ging verder in de bowling?! Ja ja die was namelijk tot 3:00 open. Tja wij doen het andersom maar we kunnen jullie vertellen dat deze volgorde ook hilarisch is. Raphael onderhandelde een topprijs en er klommen gelijk een aantal Zweedse dames op het dak van de tuktuk. Dat was niet de bedoeling (alleen bagage) dus die moesten gauw weer naar beneden. Uiteindelijk zaten we met z’n twaalven waarbij er een paar dames overdwars lagen omdat het anders niet pastte. Toen we eenmaal reden en foto’s van het spektakel aan het maken waren zei Raphael dat we dit moment goed moesten onthouden zodat we eraan konden denken als we eenmaal terug in ons werkende leven waren.. Zullen we zeker doen.
Na 10 minuten rijden stopte hij ineens in het midden van de stad en zei dat we meer moesten betalen. Ga dat maar eens van 12 beschonken westerlingen proberen te eisen. Mooi niet, we bleven lekker zitten in de tuktuk en een luid gejuich steeg op toen hij weer plaatsnam en verder reed. Even later stopte hij weer, vraagtekens boven alle hoofden: gaat hij zijn vrienden erbij halen? Er kwam wel iemand mee maar het was iemand met benzine in wat colaflessen en uiteindelijk kwamen we dan aan bij de bowling. We bestelden wat te drinken en bekeken het tafereel dat gaande was. Veel Lao en westerlingen, harde dance muziek, gedimt licht en bowling! De sfeer was door het uitgaan ervoor erg uitgelaten en hilarisch. Er gebeurde vanalles en niemand bakte er veel van tot vermaak van iedereen. Uiteindelijk kregen we een baan toegewezen en hebben we een geinig potje gebowld. Hier geen maximum speeltijd van een uur maar gewoon gaan totdat je klaar bent. En dat kan natuurlijk wel even duren als je wat op hebt. Er was niet alleen bier gedronken maar door sommigen (niet door ons) wat gerookt en dat was te merken aan de bowlingskills (geen).
In de baan naast ons bowlden heel fanatieke Lao waarvan er een zelfs bowlingschoenen had (de rest gewoon op blote voeten, met hilarische valpartijen als gevolg)! De uiteindelijke score: 1 Rachel, 2 Carolien, 3 Martijn, 4 Izzy, 5 David en 6 Raphael. Om 3 uur was het hier dan ook schluss en waren wij klaar met bowlen. We kwamen er deze keer niet uit met de tuktuk driver en gingen lopend naar huis. Na een innig afscheid van iedereen (drank) waren we om 3:30 thuis en konden we nog 3 uur slapen… Dat beloofde wat voor de volgende dag! Vrijdag 11 januariHet opstaan verliep vrij moeizaam. Vooral Martijn moest eraan geloven (”ik ruik mijn eigen kegel”) ivm 6 halve liters Laobeer. Carolien had het er bij 1 en een spy gehouden en die voelde zich aanzienlijk beter (moest er natuurlijk ook een beetje aan geloven met die kegel van Martijn, maar goed). Douchen, tas inpakken, ontbijten en Martijn ging alvast de lunch halen bij de banquette stalletjes in het oude centrum. Om 7:45 kwam de tuktuk ons halen om ons naar het busstation te brengen.
Bij de bus aangekomen moesten we concluderen dat deze zijn glorietijd allang voorbij was. Veruit het meest krakkemikkige exemplaar ooit. Gaten in plafond en wanden, kapotte en vieze stoelen, groezelige verschoten gordijntjes en een paar flinke barsten in de vooruit (waarschijnlijk nog nooit gehoord van hpx2hars).
Het starten was ook een eerste keer voor ons: het tegen elkaar duwen van de draadjes… We zaten met de locals en nog 4 andere toeristen in de bus. De locals bleken er aparte gewoontes op na te houden: vuilins werd resoluut naar buiten gegooid of het nu plastic of sinaasappelschil was en of we nou in de bergen reden of in een dorpje. Het maakte allemaal niet uit. Daarnaast was goed te merken dat we nu dichter bij china zaten. Er werd namelijk heel wat afgerocheld en dan vooral door de vrouwen… De weg was van dezelfde kwaliteit als de bus. In de hoogste categorie een hobbelige weg en in de laagste categorie een lancering vanuit je stoel. Met als resultaat dat je op het ene moment zat weg te doezelen (ivm 3 uurtje slaap) en op het andere moment klaarwakker, rechtop je zere knie zat te masseren omdat je die tijdens de lancering had gestoten aan dat nutteloze ijzeren dingetje dat ze gebruiken om de stoelen aan elkaar vast te maken. De vergezichten uit de bus waren echt de moeite waard. Prachtige bergen met ontzettend veel groen, dan weer rijstvelden en dan weer een dorpje waar alle Lao in bamboehutjes wonen. Martijn liet nog wat plaatjes zien uit de guides van Laos, Australie en Nieuw Zeeland aan de locals uit de bus. Vooral de plaatjes van de maori’s, bungyjumpen en parachutespringen vonden ze erg interessant. Ze hadden zoiets natuurlijk nog nooit gezien. Net voordat we aankwamen in Luang Nam Tha was het etenstijd en zag je alle bamboehutbewoners voor hun hutje met de pan op het vuur zitten. Af en toe kwamen er heerlijke vlagen verse rijstgeuren naar binnen. Het is nu duidelijk aan de mensen te zien dat we in een ander land zitten. Eerst leken de Thai en Lao nog wel enigzins op elkaar maar nu zien de mensen er alweer heel anders uit. We vertrokken met alle wolken nog in het dal en dat we aankwamen daalden de mist alweer neer in de vallei. Weer een dag voorbij! Eerst even lekker eten en ondertussen keek Carolien even wat voor guesthouses er nog kamers hadden in de buurt. Ze vond een heel schattig houten huis net om de hoek van de hoofdweg en daar hebben we nu onze intrek genomen. Sinds Martijn lekker gedoucht heeft en in bed is gaan liggen is hij vertrokken (20:00). Die kan zijn slaap goed gebruiken. Het plan is nu om hier eerst even niks te doen en informatie in te winnen over het trekken en in de rondte te fietsen. Er liggen namelijk heel veel leuke dorpjes op fietsafstand. Daarna willen we vertrekken richting Viang Phouka om vanuit daar een mooie trekking te doen. Daar komen heel weinig toeristen en dat moet het een hele gave belevenis maken.

Wat een prachtige avonturen weer! Gelukkig lag tijgertje lekker te slapen! Mooie foto!
Gezellig om het uitgaans leven mee te maken en te zien hoe het er aan toe gaat. Jullie zijn al sterren in het afdingen hé! Dat lijkt mij knap lastig! Hier in Neck gaat het zijn gangetje, ik ben mij aan het voorbereiden op de Weissensee! Eind januari vertrek ik om op 2 februari de 100 km. te rijden! Ik ga salamonschaatsen huren in Zuid-Holland het dorp ter Aar, die heb ik net gebeld en om te huren kost het 75 euro en nieuw 345 euro! En je kunt niet afdingen hoor!! Ha, ha.
Ik blijf jullie avonturen volgen en doe voorzichtig hé, zo’n bus is ook niet alles!

Ik zit hier heerlijk aan mijn tweede bakkie koffie……8 scheppen zonder kop op een volle pot. Echt lekker die koffie Tinus! Geen krullend tandvlees! En ook geen aanslag op de maag.
Wat een leuke dagen hebben jullie weer achter de rug. Zo gezellig om te lezen.
De foto’s zijn prachtig. Het lijkt net op een Zeldaspel. Dat vond ik ook al van de foto’s van die ruïne’s op de nieuwe cd die van de week binnen gekomen is.
Bij de waterval zou je bijna een controller in je hand nemen.
Maak je niet ongerust….het gaat goed met me, die gedachte ging ‘in a split of a second’ door mijn hoofd.
Die BUS………….doodeng!! Maar jullie hebben het goed doorstaan.
Ik vind het zo heerlijk om alles te lezen, natuurlijk hadden jullie al het een en ander verteld maar door het lezen heb je weer herkenning aan wat jullie verteld hadden. Enig.
Lieverds, blijf tijdens de trekking op de paden, veel te gevaarlijk om op je eigen houtje te gaan. Ik heb op de site gekeken en het ziet er allemaal schitterend uit.
Daar zullen jullie vast en zeker ook weer onvergetelijke avonturen beleven.
