Zaterdag 12 januari
De dag begint hier vanaf 06.30 uur tot 08.00 uur er wordt dan door diverse speakers in Luang Nam Tha propagandavoer afgespeeld. Waar we in Luang Prabang nog niks van merkten wordt hier meteen duidelijk: we bevinden ons in een communistisch land. De kamer was de eerste nacht goed bevallen, prima bedden, kussens en lekkere dikke dekens tegen de kou. We draaiden ons nog een keer om en konden redelijk doorslapen met inzet van de oordoppen. Eenmaal opgestaan lekker rustig ontbijten en een fietsje huren.
We zijn eerst op onze fietsjes naar green discovery gereden, een organisatie die zich heeft gespecialiseerd in eco trekkings, en hebben ons geinformeerd over de mogelijkheden. De trekking die uiteindelijk onze voorkeur heeft is de zogenaamde tweedaagse Akha trail. Waarbij je door de jungle trekt en de dorpjes van de Akha stam bezoekt. Omdat dit nogal prijzig is hebben we aangegeven dat we deze trekking alleen willen doen als er minimaal 4 deelnemers zijn waardoor de prijs per persoon flink naar beneden gaat. We zijn benieuwd!
Na het bezoek aan green discovery hebben we weer een keur aan voertuigen voorbij zien komen op onze mountainbikes (zie filmpje op de filmpagina!). Vrouwen wasten sla maar ook kleren in de rivier en kinderen zwaaiden en riepen enthousiast sabaideeee! Na een tijdje rondfietsen stopten we bij het panda restaurant. Carolien bestelde een verse appelshake (mmm) en Martijn een cola (de verhouding was ver te zoeken aangezien Carolien haar shake in een bierpul zat). Ook het broodje tonijn dat Carolien bestelde bleek mega te zijn. Martijn keek enigszins met jaloezie naar het eten. Gelukkig kwam niet lang daarna de door Martijn bestelde banana pancake ook erg groot uitgevallen onze kant op. Martijn smulde ervan want het waren maar liefst 3 pancakes. Na onze magen te hebben gevuld hebben we onze 4 gb kaart met foto’s gebrand en een post op de website gezet. Ondertussen kreeg Martijn steeds meer last van maagkrampen…
Na nog een ronde gefietst te hebben keerden we terug naar ons guesthouse en kwamen we Xavier tegen die we in Mae Hong Son hebben ontmoet (zie posts Thailand). Hij kwam net terug van een 5 daagse tour waarbij hij in z’n eentje op een gehuurde scooter door het landschap trok. We spraken af om s’avonds met elkaar te eten. Het was erg gezellig en hebben een hoop bijgepraat. We hadden net als hem de franse acrobaat ontmoet en lieten hebben wat foto’s laten zien van het uitgaan in Luang Prabang. Hij moest er erg om lachen! Voldaan gingen we naar bed en ondertussen borrelde de maag van Martijn rustig door…
Zondag 13 januari
Na veel te hebben gereisd besloten we zaterdag om vandaag een chilldag in te lassen, want de busreis gecombineerd met erg weinig slaap was nog steeds te voelen. We hadden ons voorgenomen om deze dag te gebruiken om ons in te lezen over: cultuur van Laos, politiek systeem (lees: geen) en de verschillende stammen en hun gebruiken.
Ondanks dat Martijn deze nacht inging met een borrelende maag was het Carolien die als enige deze dag aan de diarree ging. Hevige krampen als gevolg maakte dit chilldagje een must. Wat een inzicht hebben we toch in onszelf 
!
Ondanks de maagkrampen kon er toch gelezen worden en kwamen we de dag redelijk door. Martijn had nog een fruitschaal geregeld voor Carolien, want er moet toch wat in! We zijn deze dag maar vroeg naar bed gegaan om maar weer snel beter te worden…
Maandag 14 januari
Carolien werd gelukkig alweer een stuk beter wakker. Na een voorzichtig ontbijt (baquette met jam en thee) zijn we naar een ander trekking office gelopen om ons daar te informeren over de mogelijkheden. We besloten om ons hier in te schrijven voor de 2 daagse Akha trail voor aankomende woensdag 16 januari. Voor Carolien zijn we nog even naar de Chinese markt gelopen om een shirt met lange mouwen te kopen voor de trekking.
Daarna even een pauze en pitten in het guesthouse terwijl Martijn dit stukje schreef.
Na de welkome rust gingen we geld halen bij de bank. We liepen echter eerst tegen het postkantoor aan en haalden snel de dvd op om deze te versturen. Achter de balie stond een dame met kind op de arm. Vrouwen werken hier wel maar kinderopvang kennen ze niet dus het kind gaat mee naar het werk of de man houdt zich er mee bezig (zoals bij ons guesthouse). Het kind zit dan niet altijd op de arm maar hangt meestal op de rug in een soort draagsysteem.
Na het posten op naar de bank. Het zag er echter behoorlijk dicht uit, de hekken waren al gesloten. De sluitingstijd bleek half vier te zijn. Van maandag tot vrijdag van 8:30 tot 15:30 en dan nog een uur pauze. Typisch Lao, mensen werken hier alleen als het moet en zijn niet te ambitieus. Het ligt namelijk aan karma of je succesvol bent, zelf je best ervoor doen heeft daar geen invloed op. Als al de rijst geplant is hebben ze pauze totdat er geoogst moet worden. Dat maakt dat hier een hele relaxte sfeer hangt en men ook niet zo pusherig is. Maar terug naar de bank. We stonden dus voor een dichte deur maar gelukkig was er een ATM machine voor creditcards. Perfect! Konden we toch nog wat extra duiten verzamelen. Het is hier namelijk niet al te makkelijk om aan geld te komen. Als je geluk hebt zit er een bankkantoor waar je met je creditcard geld op kan nemen. Het alternatief is geld meenemen en ter plekke wisselen. Dit hebben we al eerder gedaan met meegenomen baht. Je moet alleen weer niet teveel wisselen want geen ander land wisselt kippen in voor ander geld.
Dinsdag 15 januari
Ook deze dag voelde Carolien zich goed dus op naar Vieng pou kha want de volgende dag willen we gaan trekken in de omgeving. We waren op tijd op het busstation want de avond ervoor was ons verteld dat de bus om 08.00 uur zou vertrekken. Helaas stond op het bord dat de songthaew om 09.30 zijn motor zal starten. Op naar het Panda restaurant om nog een thee te drinken! Half tien zaten we netjes in de songthaew maar de chaffeur zat nog lekker tv te kijken. Martijn vondt die mentaliteit maar niks en vondt dat “als ze dit geeneens kunnen dan wordt het niks met het land”. De locals leken er mee begaan en stapten in en uit om af en toe met de chaffeur tv mee te kijken. Uiteindelijk vertrokken we om 11.15 uur, waarom om deze tijd mag joost weten. Opgelucht lachten we allebei en naar de locals…
Eenmaal onderweg ging de trip vrij vlot, want de chinezen hadden een ge-asfalteerde weg aangelegd die ieg tot aan Vieng pou kha rijkte. Bij het dorp Baan Nam O zetten we nog wat mensen af en ongemerkt ook een jongetje die er helemaal niet uit moest. Zijn moeder en vader zaten in de songthaew toen we weer vertrokken. Carolien vroeg zich af of het jongetje wat nu de songthaew achterna rende toch ook niet bij onze medereizigers hoorde. Martijn vond dat je als ouder echt niet je kind vergeet, maar vond wel dat het kind verdacht hard de songthaew achterna aan het rennen was… Carolien nam toch het zekere voor het onzekere en begon gebaren te maken en te wijzen naar de vrouw. De vrouw gaf in haar gebaren weer dat haar kind in de cabine zat. Nadat Carolien het gordijntje opzij schoof zag ze toen pas dat haar kind niet in de cabine zat: PANIEK PANIEK! Na twee ferme kloppen van Carolien op de cabine stopte de chaffeur. De vrouw van de chaffeur stapte uit en vroeg aan de locals wat er danwel niet aan de hand was. Na het een en ander te hebben gezegd keerde de chaffeur snel om en kwamen we het arme kind (die ondertussen al een behoorlijk eind had gerend) gelukkig weer tegen en kon hij herenigd worden met zijn moeder. Vader en moeder hadden nog een flinke woordenwisseling terwijl wij en de andere locals aan het lachen waren, eind goed al goed …
Voltallig kwamen we aan in Vieng pou kha en ging ieder zijn eigen weg. Wij naar het toerist office om onze reservering te bevestigen en te betalen en daarna naar de buurtjes: guesthouse Boukong. Hutje gehuurd en vervolgens zijn we het dorp afgelopen. Zeer primitief dorp met hele vriendelijke bewoners met name de kinderen. Het leuke is dat iedereen wel gelukkig lijkt en daar draait het allemaal om :-).
Martijn is helemaal in zijn element, want als je hier bier in Laos besteld kan je dat zeggen met een Haags accent (lees: Bieah) en dan krijg je een halve liter Lao Beer voor je neus. Is de vier jaar hotelschool in Den Haag toch nog ergens goed voor geweest!
