Vrijdag 18 en zaterdag 19 januariVanaf Luang Nam Tha waren we op doorreis naar Nhong Khiaw. Onze eerste stopover was de stad Oudomxai. Een stad waarin meerdere hoofdwegen elkaar kruisen. In Oudomxai wonen veel chinezen en het straatbeeld kenmerkt zich dan ook door vele chinese winkels en restaurants. In Oudomxai zelf is niet veel te doen, maar omdat Carolien zich nog steeds niet top voelde besloten we toch om 2 dagen te blijven en te herstellen. Gelukkig hadden we een tv met moviechannel op onze kamer en hebben daar dankbaar gebruik van gemaakt. Tijdens de middag hebben we de stad verkent en kwamen we een plaatselijke jongen tegen die engelse les volgde en graag met ons zijn skills wilde oefenen. Hij bleek oprecht (je blijft toch argwanend) en hebben met hem de stad doorgelopen en ondertussen Engels met hem gepraat. Aan het eind hebben we nog emailadressen uitgewisseld zodat hij ook zijn grammatica kan oefenen.Tijdens het avondeten van dag twee zaten we naast een Amerikaanse vrouw (Denise) die wel heel erg lang op haar eten moest wachten. We deelden wat fried potato’s met haar en raakte zodoende in gesprek. Ze was ook op doorreis naar Nong Khiaw en ging net als ons morgen de minibus pakken. Zondag 20 januariWe waren vroeg opgestaan om er zeker van te zijn dat we een plaats hadden in de bus naar Nhong Kiaw. Na het ontbijt vervoegden we ons naar het busstation en kochten we onze kaartjes. Tot onze verbazing was het geen minibus maar een songthaew. Sterker nog, het was de enige songthaew van de gehele bushalte…WAAROM?!Voor de duidelijkheid een mini bus is hier een grote taxibus met een schuifdeur aan de zijkant en heerlijke normale autostoelen. Een songthaew daarentegen is een pick-up truck met op de laadbak een overkapping gemonteerd en heeft houten bankjes. Gelukkig zijn we inmiddels wat gewend waardoor het uiteindelijk allemaal wel meeviel. Gedurende de rit zaten er 2 personen een soort spel vergelijkbaar met ‘balletje balletje’ te spelen. De een zette grof geld in en moest vervolgens raden hoeveel munten er onder de dop zich bevonden. Voor ons was het duidelijk dat ze bij elkaar hoorde en de boel probeerde op te lichten. Een andere local was niet zo snugger en verloor een aanzienlijk bedrag en zijn gouden ketting. Na het uitstappen van de twee oplichters, kreeg hij het dan ook te horen van zijn medereizigers… Alsof dat nog niks was zat naast Carolien een oude man te pas en te onpas te roggelen, boeren te laten en zijn neus te legen. De locals keken er niet vanop maar voor ons was het nog steeds wennen. Vlak voordat de oude man eruit ging startte hij nog een slotakkoord wat door ons (inclusief Denise) hilarisch werd ontvangen het klonk zoiets als: burp! (boer) ggnn ..gggnn ..(gehemelte schrapen) gggt..gggt..(speeksel ophalen) tuff..(mond legen), nff flats! Nfff flats! (vinger op een kant van de neus en flink door de neus blazen). ‘Old habits die hard’ zullen we maar zeggen. Martijn vroeg zich af of hij nog wat knetterscheten ging laten als toegift, maar dat bleef ons gelukkig bespaard.“Sabeidiee!” Zei de oude man en ook wij gaven meneer een eindgroet voordat we weer vertrokken. In de verte zagen we meneer zijn neus nogmaals legen…Gelukkig kwamen we niet al te lang daarna aan in Nhong Khiaw. Uiteindelijk hadden we vier uur in de songthaew gezeten, maar beste lezer het was het allemaal waard want toen we over de brug liepen zag je de mooiste vergezichten. 
Wat een pitoresk plaatsje he en wat mooi! Al snel checkten we in bij phanoyng guesthouse en aten we een lekkere baquette. Omdat de schone onderbroekjes in onze backpack schaars werden hadden we besloten om onze laundry te laten wassen. Helaas kon het niet meer op dezelfde dag gewassen teruggegeven worden waardoor we een extra dag in Nhong Khiaw konden blijven, maar dat is niet erg met zo’n uitzicht! Die avond hebben we echt westers voedsel gegeten in hetzelfde restaurant: fried potato en een pizza. Verassend lekker! 
Het was te merken dat het restaurant hun core business was want toen we de volgende dag wakker werden konden we onze ruggen voelen. Het bed bleek toch wel erg hard te zijn. Na wat overleg besloten we naar een ander guesthouse op zoek te gaan. Het werd uiteindelijk een guesthouse aan de andere kant van de brug: …… Guesthouse. Het restaurant is hier discutabel maar de bedden zijn hemels! S’avonds zijn we naar ‘Le Cinema’ geweest. Hier kan je een dvd huren en vervolgens bekijken. Uiteindelijk hadden we gekozen om de film thank you for smoking te bekijken samen met Denise (de amerikaanse). 
In deze komedie treedt, Nick Naylor, de vice president van de amerikaanse tobacco industrie als ambassadeur op. Hij wordt uitgenodigd door diverse talkshows (oprah en david letterman lookalikes) om zijn standpunt te verdedigen, bezoekt de aan kankerlijdende marlboro man en wordt uiteindelijk verliefd op een journaliste die hem interviewd en vervolgens aan de schandpaal nagelt. Het slot vindt plaats bij een congres met de gouverneur van Vermont ( de verpersoonlijking van de anti rook lobby) waarin wordt gedebateerd of er wel of geen afbeeldingen op een pak sigaretten moet komen. Uiteraard wimpelt Nick Naylor al de argumenten van tafel. Al met al een grappige film!
