Vrijdag 25 januari
Heel vast geslapen en toch wel een beetje brak wakker geworden. Die avonturen gaan je niet in de koude kleren zitten ;-). Vandaag was het tijd om het internet op te gaan en uit te zoeken hoe we naar Hanoi kwamen. We ontmoeten Brian en hebben het tourist office, een travel agency en twee busstations af moeten gaan voordat we er eindelijk achter waren hoe we naar Hanoi kwamen. Er bleek alleen op zaterdag een bus rechtstreeks naar Than Hoa te gaan. Balen voor ons want onze visa ging pas in op de 27ste. Brian zou deze wel pakken, zijn visa verliep namelijk al bijna en hij moest hem snel verlengen. Uiteindelijk besloten we dan de bus tot de grens te pakken en vanaf daar een bus naar verder. Wanneer en hoe laat er bussen gingen konden we niet achterhalen. Toen we terugliepen van het busstation net buiten de stad kwamen we een leuk restaurantje tegen. Ze waren iets lekkers aan het maken en na even proeven besloten we dat we dat ook wel wilden. We namen plaats en aan de tafel naast ons zaten 3 jongens suikerriet te eten en lao lao te drinken. Uiteraard duurde het niet lang voordat wij onze eerste shot aangeboden kregen. Normaal gesproken neem je 2 shots en dan is het klaar maar deze jongens wisten van geen ophouden en wij hadden er wel schik in. 
We bestelden een paar ijskoude flessen beerlao en deelden die met hen. Dat gaat als volgt. Uiteindelijk leerden we de jongens nog lao lao drinken alsof het tequila was. Zat en voldaan verlieten we zwalkend de bar. Onderweg werd er nog hier en daar wildgeplast en overgegeven (dat laatste hebben wij niet gedaan). Maar uiteindelijk kwamen we veilig terug. Buiten bij ons guesthouse zaten twee Engelse toeristen met wie we spontaan een praatje aanknoopten. Zij vertelden dat ze morgen naar Vietnam gingen met dezelfde bus als Brian. Ze hadden van de toerist office vernomen dat er op dinsdag en donderdag bussen vertrokken vanuit het Vietnamese Nam Xoi (dit is Nameo in het Vietnamees) naar Than Hoa, de plaats waar vandaan je makkelijk Hanoi kunt bereiken. We besloten die informatie later te verifieren, nu was het hoog tijd om Brian gedag te zeggen en ons bed in te duiken want we hadden meer alcohol dan in lange tijd..
Zaterdag 26 januariOmdat we om 9 uur al in bed lagen viel de kater erg mee en waren we op tijd wakker. Na het douchen wilden we deze dag gebruiken om te posten. Eerst nog even naar de tourist office om de gisteren ingewonnen informatie te verifieren. Helaas was deze gesloten. We spraken een Fransman die dacht dat er misschien wel meer vervoer zou vertrekken vanuit Vieng Xai. Dit wilden we graag uitzoeken dus op naar het busstation. We waren even vergeten dat we daarvoor bij het andere station moesten zijn en namen toen maar weer een tuktuk erheen. Eenmaal aangekomen stond daar weer dezelfde jongen die ons de dag ervoor ook geholpen had en we kletsten even met hem. We hadden bedacht meteen naar Vieng Xai toe te gaan en daar informatie in te winnen en de grotten te bezoeken. Helaas bleek de bus die we op het oog hadden voor deze ene uitzonderlijke keer ooit wel op tijd vertrokken te zijn. We rekenden uit dat we dan niet meer terug naar Sam Nua konden komen en maakten een nieuw plan. Weer het stuk teruglopen (we wilden het graag net redden met onze kippen dus besparen was vereist) ondertussen probeerden we te voorkomen dat we door lao lao drinkende mensen zouden worden uitgenodigd en morgen alvast vertrekken naar Vieng Xai.Eenmaal terug bezochten we eerst nog even de markt. Deze streek staat bekend om haar prachtige weefproducten en daar wilden we misschien nog wat van meenemen (dat kon nog wel van de kippen). We scoorden 3 topsjawls en waren in ons element. Toen haalden we onze internetspulletjes op en vertrokken naar het internetcafe. We betraden het internetcafe met 4 anderen en ontdekten dat het cafe waarvan we dachten dat hij de snelste verbinding had eigenlijk de traagste tot nu toe was. Ouderwets inbellen 50kb/s dat eist veel geduld. Na een paar minuten hadden we het gezien en vertrokken we richting het andere cafe. Daar was het druk en gezellig en men had duidelijk al aan de lao lao gezeten (prima zolang wij het maar even niet hoeven te drinken). Voor de duidelijkheid we waren in een internet cafe geen gewoon cafe. Maar blijkbaar is dat de normaalste zaak van de wereld. Martijn ging alvast het net op om informatie in te winnen over de eventuele bussen naar de grenspost terwijl Carolien haar Lao opvijzelde. Ze kwam erachter dat de heren van origine uit Vietnam kwamen en vroeg natuurlijk meteen naar de bussen vanaf de grens. Uiteindelijk vertelden ook zij over de dinsdag/donderdag bussen naar Than Hoa en kwamen we er online achter dat we eerst langs Quan Son moesten. We leerden meteen wat handige Vietnamese woorden voor de eerste stops (toch wel erg handig om een beetje de taal te spreken) en vertrokken daarna voor een lekker diner van gewokte kip en patatjes met ketchup (hmmm). Daarna op de hotelkamer alvast begonnen met lezen over en plannen van onze reis door Vietnam. We zijn daar met Tet: Vietnamees nieuwjaar van 6 tot 8 februari. Dit duurt drie dagen maar de meeste zaken zijn een week dicht. Hoe dit precies gevierd wordt laten we jullie nog weten. We moeten rekening houden met waar we zijn omdat kamers en vervoer lastig kunnen zijn.Zondag 27 januariVroeg op en vertrokken naar Vieng Xai. Een prachtig plaatsje tussen de kalkstenen rotsen. Hier verschuilde de Pathet Lao (letterlijk: land van Lao) zich van 1964 tot 1973 voor de Amerikanen en Royal Lao army. Voordat zij in 1975 de oorlog wonnen en de regering van het land overnamen (ff checken klopt dat precies?). Eerst inchecken in een echt 50’s hotel wat volgens de lonely planet pas gerenoveerd zou moeten zijn. Dat was niet bepaald het geval maar wel een warme douche. We namen de kamer, aten wat en vertrokken naar het cave tourist centre. Aangekomen bleek deze tussen de middag dicht te zijn. Uiteindelijk begon de tour en later sloten er nog een andere groep aan. We hebben totaal twee grotten bezocht. De eerste grot was een zelfgemaakte grot (dynamiet) waarin de artillerie, luchtafweer, slaapplaats voor 2000 soldaten en een theater zich bevond.In de tweede grot hield het hoofd van de communistische beweging Pathet Lao zich schuil. In dezelfde grot sliepen zijn vier bodygards en twee chefs. Hij bestudeerde daar allerhande communistische boeken waaronder die van Lenin. De grot diende tevens als ruimte voor strategische besprekingen tussen de leiders van de Pathet Lao en de leiding van het leger.De rotsen waren zo inmens en sterk dat ze ondanks hevige en langdurige bombardementen niet zijn bezweken. Het gebied is negen jaar lang door Amerikanen gebombardeerd. In totaal zijn er meer bommen op Laos gevallen dan gedurende de gehele Tweede wereldoorlog. Toch wordt er over deze “geheime” oorlog in het westen tot op de dag van vandaag niet veel gepubliceerd. Hierna hebben we onder het genot van een beerlao onze route in Vietnam verder uitgestippeld. S’avonds hebben we allebei een bord noodles gegeten en zijn we vroeg naar bed gegaan want het was buiten erg koud, brr..bibbers! Dit kwam op zich goed uit want de volgende dag moesten we vroeg op om de songthaew richting namsoi, de grens, te pakken.Maandag 28 januariDe songthaew richting Namsoi zat weer bommetje vol, gelukkig konden wij beiden op de voorstoel plaats nemen. We waren 51 kilometer van de grens verwijderd en hierdoor nam de rit slechts twee uur in beslag :-). Aangekomen bij de grens hebben we onze laatste kippen gespendeerd aan: ( ja daar komt ie weer!) een heerlijke noodlesoep en een pak peuken. De pak peuken hebben we gekocht om uit te delen als we met een Vietnamees over de prijs van een souvenir onderhandelen. Dit schijnt nog weleens de prijs naar beneden te brengen. We gaan het meemaken.Ondanks slechte verhalen op internet over deze grensovergang ging het ons zeer gemakkelijk af. 
Bij beide grensovergangen moesten er een aantal formaliteiten worden afgehandeld, departure en entrance kaart invullen en in Vietnam werd onze bagage gecontroleerd. Nadat alles was afgerond wensde de douane ons een prettige vakantie toe: Goodmorning Vietnam!

Ook weer enig, slim die peuken, heeft alleen niet geholpen bij het afdingen van de busprijs in het volgende verhaal.
Ik had hier al een ander verhaal geschreven maar ontdekte dat ik iets verkeerds heb gedaan want er stond niets.
Natuurlijk is dit ook weer helemaal leuk en enig, ik kan er geen andere woorden voor vinden. Gewoon zalig om het mee te beleven met jullie.

Lief jullie berichtje en ik heb de 100km schaatsen gehaald!! In vijf en half uur! Het was een fatastisch om mee te maken! 1200 schaaters die om 7 uur in het donker starten en wie de 200 schaats om 5 uur s’middags binnen komen! Geweldig! sávonds weer swingen op het blarenbal hélémaal uit ons dak dat zullen jullie begrijpen!
Truus was vanmorgen op de koffie en heeft het hele verhaal gehoord en is super trots op mij!!
