Maandag 28 januari
Gemakkelijk zijn we de grens dus overgekomen en ons plan was om in Nam Xoi te overnachten. De volgende dag zou er namelijk een bus gaan naar Thanh Hoa (8 dollar p.p. Volgens de Lao informatie). Anders zouden we afhankelijk zijn van zogenaamde scootertaxi’s (xe om genaamd in Vietnam) die veel te veel vragen voor een rit. Na het dorp te hebben doorgespit voor een guesthouse hebben we uiteindelijk ingecheckt in het yen trang hotel voor $5 (met een mooie vlag voor de deur).
Onze vooroordelen over Vietnam werden meteen bevestigd: overal waar we betaalden kregen we te weinig geld terug en werd het afgedaan als een foutje. Dikke PIEP met je foutje en we waren meteen gewaarschuwd. Apart dat ze op deze manier geld aan je willen verdienen, wat ons betreft een zeer slechte mentaliteit en niet goed voor de ontwikkeling van het toerisme.
Dinsdag 29 januariNa honderd keer in het dorp te hebben stilgestaan om goederen te te laden zijn we na twee en een half uur gewacht te hebben vertrokken vanuit Nam Xoi richting Hanoi. Eenmaal het dorp verlaten kwam het spel van het afrekenen. Ook hier werden wij en de andere falang: Argentijn ,Israelier, 3 zweedse dames en een Nederlandse, zwaar genaaid. We betaalden na een hoop boembarie $20 om naar Hanoi te gaan. 
Martijn is, om het zacht uit te drukken, nog niet bepaald gecharmeerd van Vietnam en hoopt van harte dat hij zijn mening bij kan stellen. Je wordt echt overal waar geld mee is gemoeid belazerd. Sterker nog, gedurende het verhaal wordt het nog mooier…De bus zat afgeladen vol met mensen en goederen (Martijn had nog meegeholpen om de bus te beladen). We zijn inmiddels wat gewend maar deze keer werd echt elk minieme plekje dat er nog was benut. Je moet je voorstellen dat er overal in de bus zakken met nootjes en ander inhoud lagen. Bovenop, achterin, waar je normaal je voeten zet als je op een bankje zit en in het looppad. 
De zakken die tussen de bankjes in lagen dienden meteen als zitplaatsen. Naast dat het oncomfortabel druk en koud was vonden de locals het nodig om in(!) de bus hun rochelpraktijken voort te zetten, ook ging er af en toe nog eentje over zijn nek. Met al deze zaken bij elkaar waren we het al snel zat en hoopten we dat de reis voorspoedig zou verlopen. Helaas zat ook het weer niet bepaald mee en moest de bus onderweg nog honderd keer stoppen (niet overdreven) om nog meer mensen op te pikken (jawel) of spullen af te laden. Door regen en mist kwam de bus niet al te gemakkelijk door de bergen heen. Het landschap en de dorpen leken in het begin niet veel te verschillen van Laos. Naar verloop van tijd kwamen we dichterbij Than Hoa en werd het beeld stedelijker. We hadden (eindelijk!) een plaspauze en konden wat te eten kopen.
Zo rond 21.00 uur werden we afgezet bij Thanh Hoa en moesten we overstappen in een kleine bus. We vonden dit erg vreemd omdat we de busschauffeur van onze bus voor de reis tot en met Hanoi hadden betaald. Met argwaan stapte we de kleinere bus in. We zagen 2 vietnamezen waarmee we eerder op de dag (voordat we vertrokken) enige communicatie hadden en waarvan we wisten dat ze ook naar Hanoi gingen ook de kleinere bus instappen. Dat zat dus wel goed. Gekukkig stopte we hierna bij een eettent en konden we onze hongerige magen vullen. Ook deze busreis duurde weer een eeuwigheid en toen we aankwamen in Hanoi wilde de kameraad van de chaffeur opeens $5 dollar per persoon. We waren het allemaal zo zat en besloten om geen geld meer te geven. De Man legde uit dat dit een luxe bus was en daarom meer geld wilde. Wij legde hem op onze manier uit (eerst in het Engels, toen een poging Vietnamees, toen op een blaadje tekenen) dat wij al (heel veel) geld hadden betaald in de grote bus en dat we niet van plan waren om nog meer te betalen. De meneer hield zich van de domme en wilde geld zien. Van onze kant negeerde we de man compleet en hierdoor raakte hij erg geirriteerd. Op een gegeven moment maakte hij een gebaar naar Carolien dat bij Martijn verkeerd overkwam (volgens Martijn het “lynch” gebaar en volgens Carolien een gebaar dat hij het zat was) Martijn wilde hierop verhaal halen bij de man maar werd door Carolien tegengehouden. Een explosieve sfeer hing er dus.Eenmaal aangekomen bij de zuidelijke busterminal in Hanoi zette de buscrew de locals af en wilde ons er niet uit laten, wij wilden op onze beurt niet betalen. Hierop besloot de buschaffeur door te rijden en ons waarschijnlijk buiten Hanoi er alsnog uit te zetten. Hierop begonnen de Zweedse dames enigzins emotioneel te reageren ’stop the bus we’ll pay!’ (daar viel ons eengezinde blok uit elkaar), na de dames te kalmeren en de buschaffeur te laten stoppen besloten we alsnog de $5 dollar te betalen…Vanaf de zuidelijke busterminal namen we vervolgens de taxi naar het oude centrum en na een hoop zoeken (alles was dicht) vonden we uiteindelijk een guesthouse die nog open was en plek had. Met onze hoofden nog vol zijn we gaan slapen. Ook deze dag had geen positieve indruk bij ons achtergelaten..Achteraf gezien zijn we afgezet door de eerste buschaffeur (de grote bus). Hij deed ons geloven dat we naar Hanoi gingen (stond op de bus) maar eigenlijk was de eindstop Thanh Hoa. De locals die vanuit de grote in de kleine bus stapten betaalden namelijk ook in de kleine bus 70.000 dong wat ongeveer overeenkomt met $5 dollar. Zij zullen alleen geen $20 dollar hebben betaald om in Thanh Hoa te komen. Terwijl het natuurlijk ook nog zo kan zijn dat hij onderdeel uitmaakte van de scam.We waren ten volle bewust dat dit kon gebeuren maar tegelijkertijd is het het enige vervoermiddel beschikbaar wat je op de plaats van bestemming brengt. En dus ben je overgeleverd aan de corruptie in dit land. We zijn van plan om nu de zogenaamde ‘open tour’ bussen te gebruiken die speciaal voor toeristen zijn opgezet. Met deze bus kan je vanaf Hanoi naar HCMC reizen en kan je op en af stappen bij voorafbepaalde plaatsen. Waar het reizen met het openbaar vervoer in Thailand en Laos geen enkel probleem en soms zelfs de enige optie is, is het in Vietnam niet gebruikelijk om het openbaar vervoer te gebruiken omdat je als toerist geheid genaaid wordt. Hoe irritant het ook was, we hebben er achteraf om kunnen lachen met elkaar. Het was weer een mooi avontuur!

Wàt een toestand met die prijzen, ik zou helemaal uit mijn dak gaan tegen die chauffeur, wat denkt ie wel. Maar ja dat heeft geen zin, je bent toch afhankelijk van die mensen.
Wel weer een verhaal om na te vertellen en natuurlijk kan je er de volgende dag om lachen maar op dat moment voel je dat niet zo.
Oh Tinus je bent ook een echte ridder om je meissie zo te verdedigen. Pluim!!
