Wat waren we nog brak van de slopende busreis toen we woensdagochtend aan het ontbijt zaten. De kamer maakte veel goed, eindelijk een goed matras en een heerlijke, warme douche! Na het ontbijt wilde we uitchecken omdat het hotel best prijzig was, namelijk $18 per nacht. Na onderhandelen hebben we de prijs naar $12 dollar weten te brengen, maar dan wel zonder ontbijt zei de receptioniste. Dat vonden we prima en we kregen weer de sleutel van onze kamer overhandigd.Hanoi zelf was die dag erg koud en regen kwam vaak naar beneden vallen. Later bleek dat het de dagen daarop niet veel beter werd. We zijn eerst de boel gaan verkennen in de ‘old quarter van Hanoi’, daar bevonden we ons tenslotte. Wat ons als eerste op viel was het enorm drukke verkeer. 
Uit alle hoeken en gaten kwamen scooters voorbij gesjeest. Op de stoep stonden allemaal brommers en dus moest je over dezelfde straat lopen waarop de brommers je voorbij sjeesden. Dat vergde wel enige aanpassing! Overal kwam geluid vandaan: getoeter van het verkeer, ijzerbewerkers die voor hun winkel aan het werk waren, pratende en schreeuwende vietnamezen en muziek. Dit was complete chaos voor onze neus… Het leek wel een mierenhoop… Aangezien de brommers vrijwel het enige vervoermiddel zijn wordt hier ook echt alles op vervoerd. Het maakt niet uit of het twee keer zo breed, hoog of lang als de brommer zelf is, je bindt het gewoon stevig vast en gaan. Het is zo mooi dat Hans Kemp er een boek met foto’s over heeft gepubliceerd: bikes of burden. Zie het filmpje op de filmpagina voor een idee van de drukte en wat er zoal vervoerd wordt (meubels, sinaasappelbomen).
Na de boel te hebben verkend zijn we naar en langs het Hoan Kiem meer gelopen richting de ‘french quarter’. Onderweg hebben we nog een lekker chocolade broodje en croissant jan soldaat gemaakt. Deze dag hebben we vooral gebruikt om de nodige zaken te regelen. Zo hebben we informatie ingewonnen over de verschillende aanbieders van vluchten naar Maleisie en Australie. Ook hebben we opgezocht waar we ons ticket van auckland naar tokyo konden verzetten ivm met enige uitloop. s’ Avonds hebben we bij bittet gegeten, een vietnamese verbastering van biefstuk. Erg lekker was het: biefstuk met gebakken aardappels, salade en stokbrood voor nog geen 4 euro. Onderweg kwamen we langs allemaal winkeltjes die lekkernijen verkochten. We kochten een enorme reep melkchocolade met hazelnoten van ‘Van Houten’. Het is bijna Tet: Vietnamees nieuwjaar en dat betekent dat iedereen lekkernijen inslaat om samen met de familie op te peuzelen. Verder kennen ze de grote Tet schoonmaak zoals wij de grote schoonmaak met de lente kennen. We bestelden thee met honing en gingen lekker naar onze kamer. Daar hadden we movie channel en een heater en waar we deze avond dankbaar gebruik van maakten…Donderdag 31 januari
Woensdag was iedereen allemaal papiertjes aan het verbranden geweest voor hun voorouders. Dat gebeurde op straat en de rook sloeg flink op je longen (samen met de enorme hoeveelheid uitlaatgassen van alle brommers natuurlijk), gelukkig werd er vandaag niks verbrand. De dag begon droog maar na het ontbijt begon het al gauw te gieten en dat hield niet meer op. Het waren dikke druppels en al gauw zagen we de eerste brommerponchos voorbij razen, met een speciaal doorzichtig deel voor over de voorlamp van de scooter. We hadden een duidelijk doel: het omboeken van onze ticket naar Japan. Na een paar keer schuilen bleek de regen niet minder te worden en liepen we maar gewoon door. Het travel agency was met dit weer ook een restaurant geworden en de gasten zaten binnen ipv buiten op de stoep. Terwijl Martijn zijn Duits oefende met een Vietnamees die in Oost-Duitsland gewoond had betaalde Carolien voor het omboeken. Toen het eenmaal geregeld was liepen we langs verschillende electronicazaken en bewonderden de laptops en de prijzen. Ondanks het weer had Carolien (Martijn kon het zich niet voorstellen) toch zin in een ijsje en met het ijsje in de hand hebben we de tickets van Air Asia definitief gemaakt.
Vrijdag 1 februari
We wilden Ha Long Bay bezoeken maar met dit weer zien we dat niet zitten. We hebben dus allemaal nuttige zaken geregeld en Hanoi rondgestruind voor leuke winkeltjes, restaurantjes en mooie plekjes. Het leuke is dat alle winkels duidelijk gegroepeerd zijn, je hebt straten met kunst, ijzer, electronica, zijde en ga zo maar door. We hebben de laatste avond in een leuk Vietnamees restaurant gegeten: Highway 4. Afgeladen met Vietnamezen die om de haverklap iets bedenken om op te proosten. Naast ons zaten twee vrienden en terwijl we gezllig met de dame van het stel kletsten schonk de heer ons constant kleine likeurtjes in. Deze likeurtjes worden door het restaurant zelf gebrouwen. Voordat we terugliepen naar het hotel gingen we nog even naar de Heineken Jazz bar.
De live band was ontzettend goed maar hield er helaas om 23:30 mee op. Toen we naar het hotel liepen waren de straten alweer uitgestorven. Dat is zo raar, de hele dag zijn de straten overbevolkt met mensen, brommers en verkoopwaar en na een uur of 23:00 zie je daar helemaal niks meer van: alles donker en niemand meer op straat.
Zaterdag 2 februari
Vandaag rustig aan gedaan. Uitchecken, een prachtig zijden dekbedovertrek gekocht, boodschappen voor de busreis en natuurlijk een belletje naar Hanneke: gefeliciteerd met je 55ste verjaardag! Verder nog uitgezocht met wie we willen vliegen in Australie en hoe we goedkoop naar Barcelona kunnen komen aan het eind van de reis. Met bemoedigende resultaten (reken je echter nog niet rijk smeer). Om 18:30 werden we opgehaald door de mini-bus die ons naar onze sleeperbus bracht. Een bus met allemaal bedden, uiteraard pastte Martijn niet in het smalle en te korte bed, zie ook het filmpje. Hierin zingen we onze eigen versie van een bekend Vietnamees nieuwjaarsliedje.

HEEEEEEEl goed dat jullie al bezig zijn met het bekijken van vluchten naar Barcelona!!!!! Daar wordt ik heeeeeeeeel blij van, maar ik reken mij nog niet rijk (ben ik al HI HI HI)
