De koning in een bootje
Nadat we alles hadden geregeld om weer terug te komen naar Nederland en het nog te vroeg was om iedereen te bellen zijn we naar de pier gegaan om DE koning himself in een bootje (de royal barges) te zien varen. Dit moest erg spectaculair zijn. We waren op tijd en er waren nog maar weinig mensen. We hadden verwacht dat het afgeladen zou zijn. Maar een aardige, Duitse man die zijn pensioen hier aan het vieren was vertelde ons dat de Thaise mensen allemaal vrij waren en dat die hun tijd waarschijnlijk niet gingen besteden aan het kijken naar de koning(?!). We waren enigzins verbaasd. Er zaten wel al wat Thai klaar met een krantje onder hun kont en een paraplu boven hun hoofd. Zoals we al uitgebreid op de reclames hadden gezien in het ziekenhuis is het schoonheidsideaal hier om zo blank mogelijk te zijn. Er worden veel blekende cremes verkocht en ook lichtgekleurde foundation doet het goed (geen gezicht natuurlijk maar zij vinden het mooi).
Een van de jongens die er zat leek echt op Warner, het broertje van mijn (voormalige) buurjongen Aaron. We hebben een foto!
De Duitser zag wat vrienden en verliet ons, daarvoor kregen we wat andere Duitsers in de plaats. Achter ons was een hele tribune opgetrokken maar in geen velden of wegen iemand te bekennen. We begonnen te twijfelen aan onze timing en vroegen het aan Warner. Onze vermoedens werden bevestigd we moesten nog een uur wachten voordat we wat te zien zouden krijgen (en we stonden al een uur). Eigenlijk waren we er allebei klaar mee. We stonden te bakken in de zon met een hoop mensen op ons heen en het begon al drukker te worden. Stug hielden we echter vol. De Duitsers naast ons zorgden voor wat afleiding, ze hadden een ‘ wasserslang’ gelokaliseerd in het watertje tussen de pier en de waterkant (foto, filmpje volgt later!). Daarna spotten ze nog een grappig visje.
Ondertussen kwamen er ook dames langs met plastic zakjes met watjes erin. De dames zagen eruit alsof ze bij een ziekenhuis hoorden of iets dergelijks. De watjes waren in amoniak gedoopt en de Thaise mensen namen de watjes en roken eraan of wapperden deze onder hun neus door.. Wij natuurlijk meteen aan Warner gevraagd hoe dat zat. Hij sprak goed Engels en was erg behulpzaam (veel lachen ook). De watjes met amoniak waren bedoeld tegen hoofdpijn. Raar maar waar.. Uiteindelijk kwamen de boten. Er klonk luid gezang, we zochten naar de zanger op een van de boten maar de boten bleken allemaal een luidspreker te hebben waar het gezang door klonk. Het was best bijzonder om het allemaal te zien en we hebben veel foto’s en filmpjes gemaakt.
Geel en blauw zijn de koninklijke kleuren, geel voor de koning en blauw voor de koningin. Iedereen was daarom in het geel gekleed (wij ook voor de gelegenheid). Het roeien van de koninklijke boten was een kunst op zich. Dit ging synchroon en volgens een bepaalde choreografie: roei-peddel omhoog-vasthouden-roei! en weer overnieuw. Hier plaatsen we nog (een link naar) een filmpje van. ’s Avonds hebben we Israelisch gegeten, weer eens wat anders en daarna lekker op de kamer tv gekeken naar andere reizigers (National Geographic adventure) en Thaise soaps (GTST is topacteren als je dat ziet).

Wel heel goed en verstandig van jullie dat jullie in Nederland naar het ziekenhuis gaan. We kennen tenslotte allemaal die reclame met die thaise dokters die zagende bewegingen maken bij die toerist die last heeft van z’n duim.
