Rumble in the Kinabatangan Jungle & bloody leeches!
Na weer een prima rit in de luxe bus, waar je je overigens echt warm in moet kleden ivm de ijskoude airco, kwamen we aan bij het pick-up point medan selara restaurant. We werden begroet en door Luis en na de lunch vertelde hij honderduit over zijn dikke, pratende kat garfield. We leerden dat de katten in Azie soms met een halve, of zonder staart worden geboren. Vreemd maar blijkbaar waar en waarschijnlijk veroorzaakt door inteelt. 
’s Avonds was er een wandeltocht gepland. We moesten ons goed aankleden ter voorkoming van bloedzuigerinfiltraties. Dus lange mouwen en je shirt strak in je broek stoppen. Verder sokken over de broek en, als je ze pastte, regenlaarzen omdat het nogal modderig was. Je begrijpt dat we eenmaal in vol ornaat een echt fashion statement maakten ;-). We vertrokken vol goede moed maar die zakte bij Martijn al gauw in de modder, samen met zijn wandelschoenen. Hij pastte de regenlaarzen namelijk niet. We scanden elkaar op leeches en liepen snel verder als we weer het pad van een kolonie vuurmieren (die pijnlijk kunnen steken) kruisten. We zagen een slapende hornbill, een spin, een kikker, een hagedisje en veel vuurmieren en leeches. We waren dus niet al te enthousiast over deze wandeling. Martijn voelde al gauw wat steken op zijn enkels en de guide moest een leech van zijn nek verwijderen. Eenmaal terug waren de bewijzen van de leeches duidelijk aan de bloedsporen op Martijn’s enkels te zien. 
In de douche werd Carolien nog aangevallen door 2 leeches waarvan er een raak beet en later in bed vond ze er nog een in haar nek (aargh waar is Martijn als je hem nodig hebt!). Die nacht heeft ze niet al te best geslapen. 
Dat was niet heel bijzonder maar we konden even uitrusten en de catfish bekijken die in het water zwom. Uit de linkerlaars van Carolien kwam (verrassend) nog een leech zetten, zie ook het filmpje. De terugweg was hetzelfde en we waren blij toen we halverwege door een boot werden opgepikt. Al met al hebben we veel bijzondere dieren gezien en vooral genoten van de boottours, de fantastische luchten, de sterrenrijke nachten, het heerlijke eten en de supervriendelijke mensen van nature lodge. Weer een tour die Vincent top voor ons geregeld had.

Gatver, wat smerig die bloedzuigers, ik zit hier echt met de rillingen over mijn rug, bah! Het zijn niet stiekum van die ziekteoverbrengers?
De natuur zal gerust allemachtig prachtig zijn maar dit zou ik er echt niet voor over hebben, hulde voor jullie dat jullie het gewoon durven.
