Heeft iemand mijn broek gezien?
Terug in Kota Kinabalu was het na alle modderpret hoog tijd om de was te laten doen. Dus we leverden alles in bij de dames van het hostel en die wisten er wel raad mee. We brachten de dagen door met mailtjes sturen, website updaten, tickets boeken, de route voor vasteland Maleisie en Australia uitstippelen, brainstormen over volgende reizen, lezen, illegale dvd’s kijken (waarbij de uitdaging was de film ook echt te kunnen volgen aangezien ze stiekem in de bioscoop opgenomen waren en dus van hele slechte kwaliteit), playstation spelen, relaxen in het rainforest cafe en onze favoriete Maleisische starbucks: ‘coffee bean and tea leaf’ en uiteraard lekker en goedkoop eten met elkaar, Vincent en vele anderen in drukke maar verpauperde restaurantjes.
Maandag 3 maart
Om 15:30 vertrok ons vliegtuig naar Kuala Lumpur, maar de dag begon met een zoektocht naar kleding die niet terug was gekomen na het wassen.. Carolien mistte een short en 1 van haar (2!) lange broeken. De broek was nergens meer te vinden en niemand had hem gezien. Dit terwijl hij er de vorige dag nog lag… Geinspireerd door het boek dat ze op dit moment leest, over Boedhisme en het weten wat dingen werkelijk waard zijn, stapte ze makkelijk over het verlies heen en maakte ze zich hier niet druk over. Bovendien is het een goede reden om in Kuala Lumpur te shoppen voor een nieuwe ;-).
We werden samen met de Londense Mark door Vincent afgezet bij het vliegveld. Mark had niet goed opgelet met het boeken van zijn vlucht en had in KL maar een uur om zijn volgende vlucht naar Singapore te halen. Gedoemd om te mislukken natuurlijk, de volgende ochtend vertrok zijn vlucht vanuit daar naar Australie. Dat was dus allemaal kielekiele.. Hij probeerde nog een vlucht eerder te regelen maar dat ging allemaal niet meer lukken. Samen met hem wachten we op onze vlucht. Hij was alleen soms niet te verstaan, iets dat we al eerder ervaren hadden, dus dan knikten we maar begrijpend.
Omdat we pas om 22:00 in de stad zouden zijn hadden we van tevoren al een hostel geboekt via www.hostelworld.com. De trip verliep uitermate soepel, zoiets hadden we nog nooit meegemaakt. In het vliegtuig konden we al een ticket kopen voor de shuttlebus naar het centrale station van KL. Daar kochten we een coupon voor een taxi waar onze bestemming al op stond. De taxi bracht ons (in de stromende regen) naar de plaats van bestemming en na een heerlijke Indiase maaltijd checkten we in bij het hostel. De man achter de balie was superaardig en vanaf het dakteras kon je de KL tower zien maar de kamer was erg smerig en de douches stonken, daar komen we dus niet meer terug.
Dinsdag 4 maart
Vroeg uit de veren om de bus naar Cameron Highlands te pakken. Deze bestaat uit een zeer vruchtbare hoeveelheid plaatsen die wat hoger in de bergen liggen. Hier bevinden zich sinds de 30′er jaren al enorme theeplantages en nu ook vele fruit-, aarbeien-, en honingboerderijen. Vanwege veel zon en genoeg regen groeit alles hier als kool.
We kwamen s’middags aan, bekeken het stadje en lazen in onze boeken. We zaten in een superleuk hostel: de Cameronian Inn, die ook nog eens erg goedkoop was en eten, drinken en internet aanbood. Terwijl Martijn lag te pitten had Carolien een goed gesprek met een Indische werknemer van het complex. Hij vertelde over de ongelijkheid in Maleisie, autochtone Maleisiers krijgen nog altijd een voorkeursbehandeling boven Indiers en Chinezen, die er nu toch ook al een hele tijd wonen. Op 7 maart gaan ze weer naar de stembus en alle steden hangen vol met vlaggetjes en pamfletten. Hij ging niet stemmen.
In Maleisie wonen in totaal 26 miljoen mensen afkomstig van verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Slechts 58% is autochtoon, 24% Chinees en 8% Indisch. De rest is van andere komaf. 58 procent van de populatie is Moslim; 22.9 procent beoefent Boeddhisme; 11.1 procent is Christen; 6.3 percent Hinduist; and 2.6 percent Confucianist, Taoist, of van een andere traditionele Chineze religie.
Het bijzondere is dat ondanks dat de bevolking zo divers is in afkomst en religie, iedereen elkaar wel respecteert. Meisjes in minirokjes lopen naast volledig gesluierde vrouwen en ook onder de moslimgemeenschap is veel diversiteit. Soms volledig gesluierd (wel met slippers), soms een westerse outfit (jeans en een strak t-shirt) met hoofddoek. Iedereen gelooft op zijn eigen manier en dat is ok. Er staan overal moskees, boedhistische tempels, hindi tempels, Chineze tempels en ook kerken. In het begin is het erg verwarrend dat iedereen er zo anders uitziet, wat is nou de originele maleisier?, maar dat is het juist: de maleisier is al die verschillende culturen en uiterlijkheden. Net zoals Maxima over Nederland zei: ‘Nederland heeft niet 1 identiteit, de ‘Nederlander’ bestaat niet. Dat is hier ook het geval. Alleen gedraagt iedereen zich hier netjes en er zijn zo op het oog geen onderlinge spanningen.
Woensdag 5 maart
Deze dag hebben we een brommer (met 125cc powerrrr voor de bergen) gehuurd om de Cameron highlands mee door te crossen. We hebben het zo gehad met alle tours dat we het heft in eigen handen nemen en daarnaast is brommeren ook gewoon heel erg leuk. De verhalen over Maleisiers op de weg zonder enige angst voor de dood is nog steeds nergens bevestigd dus we durfden het aan. Met onze guitige pothelmpjes zagen we eruit om op te vreten.
We bezochten eerst het chique Lake House, dat zich (tja moeten we het nog uitleggen) aan het voorspelbare meer bevindt. Het is opgetrokken in volledig Engelse stijl en dient als restaurant en luxe hotel. De prijs van een kopje thee gaat hier dan ook minstens 5 keer over de kop. Na wat foto’s vervolgden we snel weer onze weg door de ietwat mistige bergen richting de theeplantage van Boh. We sloegen een klein bergweggetje in en het uitzicht was prachtig! De theeplanten omringden ons overal terwijl de weg zich krulde door het glooiende landschap. We werden door meerdere borden gevraagd erop los te toeteren voor blinde bochten en dat hoefde Martijn geen tweede keer te lezen. Hij toeterde er lustig op los daarbij roepend; ‘en deze is voor Mams, deze is voor Arjan’ enzovoort enzoverder, we zijn uiteraard niemand vergeten tijdens deze toeterparade!
De theeplantages zijn echt enorm en ze zien er ontzettend mooi uit. Ze bloeien elke 3 weken en hebben diepgroene blaadjes. Het is net een tapijt dat zich over de bergen uitstrekt. Uiteraard dronken we er na aankomst even een lekker kopje thee. Daarna bekeken een informatieve en iets te veel bohbejubelde film over de productie van deze topthee. Toen we eenmaal het uitkijkpunt beklommen hadden was de mist al wat meer opgetrokken en het uitzicht schitterend. Zie ook het filmpje. We vervolgden onze tour naar een view point, dat we niet konden vinden dus maar naar de volgende theeplantage. Daar was het weer flink genieten van de omgeving en de rit erheen (zie weer een filmpje!). Na een nog warme wafel met verse aardbeien, chocoladesaus en slagroom (dit keer helaas geen foto) hadden we alles gezien en gingen we terug naar het dorp. De avond hebben we doorgebracht met het kijken van een absurde film waar we de ballen van begrepen en het uitwisselen van reisinfo met een ander stel dat net uit australie kwam.
Donderdag 6 maart
Vroeg op, roti ontbeten en om 8 uur weer in zo’n luxe bus met maar 27 plaatsen gestapt. Deze heeft maar 3 stoelen per rij (2 rechts, 1 links), superbrede stoelen met voetsteunen die omhoog kunnen en waarvan de leuning behoorlijk plat kan zodat je lekker kunt pitten. We kwamen 5 uur later aan in Butterworth en namen daar de ferry naar Georgetown. Dit was de handelshaven van Maleisie en omstreken voordat deze plaats ingenomen werd door Singapore. De stad moet mooi en superrelaxed zijn.

Oh oh oh wat is alles weer prachtig, ik had woensdag al foto’s op Google Earth gezien van de theeplantages in Cameron Highlands. Echt prachtig.
Het is idd net een tapijt wat over de heuvels ligt.
Lekker hè zo relaxed kunnen reizen, dat lijkt me een verademing.
De filmpjes staan nog niet op de site, duurt zeker ff bij youtube voordat het te zien is?
Jullie kleding is allemachtig prachtig. Werkelijk waar, de pakken erg mooi, de voering is ook helemaal geweldig, ook van de winterjassen.
En dan het gebloemde jasje van Carolien, nou zeg die is echt leuk, geweldig.
En de stropdas van Carolien in de kleur van de voering van het pak, dat is toch enig.
Het was ontzettend leuk om allemaal uit te pakken. Net een Kerstpakket. Ik kan wel blijven schrijven hoe leuk, maar ja dat is het ook.
Nou lieffies maak er weer een gezellige tijd van daar, geniet met volle teugen en ja jullie zijn echte bofkonten.
