De mooiste stad van Maleisie met een superrelaxte sfeer, volgens onze rough guide zeker de moeite waard. De sfeer is inderdaad behoorlijk relaxed en
We wilden graag naar de Perhentian eilanden, die moesten schitterend zijn en lagen mooi op de route. We hoorden alleen dat het weer daar niet zo best zou zijn. Allerlei alternatieve routes en eilanden passeerden de revu. We doken het internet op en vonden daar uiteindelijk voorspellingen bij het Maleisische centrum voor meteroleogie. Nog 2 dagen slecht en daarna alleen maar mooi. Alle andere eilanden hadden allemaal slechte voorspellingen dus we besloten het erop te wagen.
Vrijdag 7 maart
De ochtend brachten we door met het kopen van een buskaart aan het vasteland. Daarvoor staken we over naar Butterworth. We kwamen uiteindelijk een loket tegen dat ons een kaartje voor de nachtbus verkocht. We waren op de heenweg per ongeluk het loket ingelopen van de Maleisische sproorwegen en liepen daar op de terugweg nog even langs om wat vragen te stellen over de jungle train die we straks richting het zuiden willen nemen. Ze vroeg heel aardig of alles gelukt was met ons kaartje en toen we die lieten zien wist ze ons te vertellen dat het om een extra bus ging en dat er geen bedrijf op het kaartje stond. Ze adviseerde ons er op tijd te zijn om teleurstellingen te voorkomen.
Hierna hebben we wederom een dvd met foto’s op de post gedaan en de website bijgewerkt. Het postkantoor was gelegen bij een enorme shoppingmall dus we namen daar even een kijkje. Op de bovenste verdieping was een game zone en het geluid was oorverdovend. We begrepen niet dat de ‘toezichthouders’ van rond de 50 daar relaxed tussen konden zitten. Het viel al ons al eerder op dat alle internetcafe’s hier speakers naast de computers hebben staan ipv koptelefoons, zoals andere aziatische landen dat tot nu toe hadden. Als zo’n internetcafe dan vol zit is het een enorme herrie van muziekluisteraars, shoot’m up gamers en dansspelletjes spelers. We hebben 1x geprobeerd om in zo’n omgeving te posten maar zijn gillend gek de toko uit gerend.
Nadat we flink waren afgekoeld in de shoppingmall hebben we even wat spullen gekocht voor onderweg en nog maar eens een wandeling gemaakt door de stad. Aan de zee met de skyline van Georgetown met dreigende donderwolken als uitzicht hadden we een goed gesprek over onze toekomst.
We aten weer bij de Indier en gingen toen bepakt en bezakt op weg naar de nachtbus. De bus zou om half tien vertrekken dus we kwamen daar rond achten aan. Het loket waar we ons moesten melden was als enige omringd met mensen en toen we daardoorheen kwamen kregen we een ‘busnummer’ op ons kaartje geschreven. Ze vroegen ons bij de bussen te wachten en dan zouden we onze bus vanzelf zien. Er was een groot onverhard terrein vol met plassen waar bussen af en aan kwamen en een weg waar ook veel bussen langsreden. Na een tijdje langs de weg gestaan te hebben terwijl Martijn met het kaartje in zijn hand de bussen afging hadden we nog geen resultaat en besloten we tussen de weg en het terrein in te gaan staan.
We probeerden alle bussen te checken maar sommigen gingen te snel weer weg en anderen hadden niet eens een nummer. Uiteindelijk bleek dat het ‘busnummer’ dat we gekregen hadden gewoon de nummerplaat was. Het was ontzettend druk op het terrein met mensen die hetzelfde als ons deden en het verkeer op de hoofdweg stond niet stil. De volgende dag moest iedereen stemmen en dat moet blijkbaar in de plaats van herkomst, daarom was iedereen onderweg naar huis. Daarnaast was dit de dag dat er een week vakantie was aangebroken. Een half uur na de officiele vertrektijd toog Carolien naar het loket om te vragen hoe het zat. ‘Daar wachten’ zeiden ze ‘moet ik dan echt elke bus die er langskomt checken?!’ vroeg Carolien. ‘Ok blijf hier maar wachten. dan zeggen we wel wanneer je bus er is’ antwoorden zij. Martijn opgehaald en wachten bij het loket. Niet veel later was de bus er. Wij weer terug met alle spullen. Helaas was het de bus toch niet… Wat een chaos, en dat terwijl het vervoer hier tot nu toe zo soepeltjes ging. Toen Carolien het even later nog maar een keer ging vragen bleek de bus er te zijn en konden de tassen erin. Omdat het een extra bus was, was het deze keer geen 2+1 vip maar gewoon 2 om 2 stoelen.
Na een tijdje rijden merkte Carolien dat de bus bij een bepaalde snelheid wel erg heen en weer aan het schudden was. Er leek iets mis te zijn met de vering waardoor de bus elke keer als hij een bobbel in de weg tegenkwam of een bocht op een bepaalde manier nam van links naar rechts begon te zwenken. De bus zelf slingerde dan niet maar de cabine ging vervaarlijk heen en weer. Geen fijn gezicht en met name geen fijn gevoel, het leek daardoor alsof de bus oncontroleerbaar werd.
Op een gegeven moment was het zo erg dat iedereen in de cabine het uitschreeuwde: Heee! Toen deed de chauffeur het iets rustiger aan en stopten we bij het volgende wegrestaurant. Het gesprek met de buschaffeur leverde niets verassends op en we kwamen tot de conclusie dat de rechter achtervering het begeven had. Carolien heeft de rest van de reis niet meer kunnen slapen (Martijn had er minder moeite mee) en hield de bus nauwlettend in de gaten.
Gelukkig kwamen we na een hoop kilometers waggelend afgelegd te hebben toch op de plaats van bestemming aan en namen we een taxi naar het havenstadje Kuala Besut. Vanaf hier namen we de speedboot naar de Perhintian eilanden. Er stond veel wind waardoor ook deze tocht gepaard ging met een hoop schommelingen en zware klappers op grote golven in de open zee. Zwaar afgepeigerd kwamen we aan op het kleine eiland en liepen we met onze backpacks door het bos naar de andere kant van het eiland: Long Beach. We hebben bij een nieuw resort/camping genaamd Bintang een leuk houten huisje weten te huren voor 30 ringit (7 euro) en zijn meteen het bed ingedoken, want wat waren we moe! In de middag zijn we naar het strand gegaan en hebben we genoten van de hoge golven (er staat een hoop wind aan deze kant van het eiland). Als je de golf op de juiste manier pakt dan zweef je meters op de golf mee, een heerlijk gevoel!
Zaterdag 8 maart t/m donderdag 13 maart
De dagen hier stonden in het teken van uitrusten, boeken lezen, lekker eten (vooral vis!), snorkelen en genieten van het eiland en natuurlijk van elkaar (maar dat doen we al de hele reis).
Het snorkelen viel wat tegen: slecht zicht en veel afgestorven koraal. Wel hebben we na hard ’snorkelen’ schilpadden, black tip reef sharks, bumphead parrot fish (zeer groot met een grote bobbel op hun hoofd) en vele andere vissen gespot.
Het eten hier was erg lekker en er stonden diverse aparte gerechten op het menu zoals een chocolade snickers shake en een snickers/mars roti. We hebben ze allebei geprobeerd en het was hemels! En goed nieuws voor de thuisblijvers we hebben het recept voor de snickershake weten te bemachtigen:
Snickershake:
Nodig: blender. Ingredienten: een halve snicker, condensed milk (of volle melk en een paar schepjes suiker), flink wat ijsblokjes, 3 scheppen nesquick of cacao. Gooi alles in de blender en als het goed is komt er wat overheerlijks uit!
Dinsdagavond werd in het restaurant Rumours om 20:00 een film gedraaid: 300 spartans, en de daarna de lachwekkende parodie.. Meet the spartans. Het origineel is soms al bijna een parodie op zich maar neemt zichzelf veel te serieus, daarom is de parodie een aangename en vooral in het begin hilarische afwisseling.
Woensdag kwamen we tijdens de lunch in gesprek met een Italiaan genaamd Hayan (van half Syrische komaf). Hij vroeg of we Nederlands waren, want hij herkende de tonen omdat hij zeven jaar voor ING had gewerkt. Hij vertelde dat hij via omzwervingen nu in Bahrein werkt voor American Express als manager op de business intelligence afdeling. We hadden het naar ons zin en praten over vele gezamenlijke interesses zoals duiken, eten, sport en carriere. We lieten de foto’s zien van onze reis en hij moest vooral erg lachen om het feit dat Carolien elke wc die we ‘tegenkomen’ op de foto zette. Ook vond hij de schilderijen erg indrukwekkend. We spraken af om s’avonds naar Coral Bay te gaan, aan de andere kant van het eiland, om te genieten van een barbeque. We namen alledrie die avond een spaanse makreel, die eerder op de middag uit het water was gevist door de trotse jongen achter de barbeque :-). Het was weer smullen en Hayan was zichtbaar onder de indruk..
Donderdag 13 maart
S’ochtends pakten we de speedboot naar het vasteland. De laatste giant spiders tot ziens gezegd op weg door de jungle naar Coral Bay en hop de speedboot in. De zee was een stuk rustiger dan de heenweg en met de 400 PK waren we binnen no time aan wal. Een Amerikaans stel, Stephen en Megan, gingen net als ons de volgende dag met de jungle train naar het zuiden. We besloten om gezamenlijk de taxi te nemen naar Tamah Nerah. Een van de plaatsen waar de trein langskomt. We kochten de tickets voor de volgende dag bij de balie en lieten ons afzetten bij het hotel van Tamah Nerah door de taxichaffeur. Het hotel was de absolute nummer 1 in onze ‘RANZIGSTE HOTEL’ lijst ooit. Iedereen vondt het erg smerig en Martijn besloot om in het stadje rond te vragen of er geen andere slaapgelegenheden waren. Na veel rondgevraagd te hebben bleek er een hotel te ver weg uit het centrum te zijn waardoor we uiteindelijk besloten om te overnachten in het meest ranzigste hotel ooit. We zullen het niet snel vergeten.. Hier een foto ter illustratie:
Tijdens de treinreis leerden Stephen en Megan ons het spel persuendo, fillipijns pokeren. Na een paar potjes leerden wij hun het spel pesten, zo kwamen we de tijd een beetje door. De trein reed recht door de jungle en dat leverde mooie plaatjes op.

Weer helemaal énig om de verhalen te lezen, super smerig die wc zeg, gatverdegatver.
En?? Wat zijn de toekomst plannen?
Toch niet ergens in verweggistan werken?
Ina is idd ée’n van de mensen die niet meer op jullie site komt.
Dat vindt ze hartstikke erg. ik heb het nog geprobeerd door de link door te sturen maar ook dat hielp niet.
Ik hoop dat het nu met deze nieuwe post wel weer lukken zal.

Helaas, was dat niet zo en nu is deel 1 van de Cameron Highlands wel gelukt.
Nou schatten, ik ga een rondje met de hondjes, ik mag weer een vissie halen voor Stekker.
Ze zijn druk in Stephan’s huis.

Wat een fantastische verhalen allemaal weer. Wij zijn zelf ook op Perhentian Islands (kecil, long beach) geweest. Brings back good memories! Vooral de foto’s. Ook wij zaten toen te twijfelen vanwege het weer, maar dat viel achteraf mee.
