Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie, OI OI OI!!
Zaterdag 22 maart
Onze eerste kennismaking met Australie is de douane, al in het vliegtuig wordt maar liefst 4x meegedeeld dat Australie er een Quarantaine beleid op nahoud en dat je alles moet aangeven anders word je flink beboet. Carolien voelt nattigheid omdat ze schelpen heeft meegenomen uit Maleisie en dit ook een dierlijk product is. Maar gelukkig is dat prima en mag ze deze houden. Het ecosysteem van Australie is heel delicaat, heel lang afgesloten geweest van alle andere continenten en heeft een woestijnachtige grond en heet klimaat. Daarom hebben planten en dieren zich hier heel anders ontwikkeld dan die op het vasteland. Als je aarde, eten of planten meeneemt kunnen die bepaalde ziektes met zich meebrengen met desastreuze gevolgen voor de natuur. Vandaar dat we bij binnenkomst check op check op check kregen van onze invoerkaarten. Waarna we vervolgens bij een balie aankwamen voor de echte tassencheck.
Tijdens deze check bleek de mentaliteit van de Aussies precies zo te zijn zoals je die kent van de schildpadden uit de film Nemo: de douanebeambte vraagt wat er in de tassen zit en om de verschillende vakken te openen. Als we het haar vertellen en laten zien reageert ze met ‘cool’! Bij de koffiebar waar we daarna ontbijten betalen we en hebben we geen kleingeld maar ‘no worries mate’ alles komt wel goed in Australie. Deze relaxte houding brengt een glimlach op ons gezicht die er voorlopig niet meer af komt.
De buschauffeur die ons naar het locale busstation brengt begroet ons met een enthousiast ‘how are ya goin?‘ en onze glimlach wordt nog breder. In de bus kopen we een kaartje voor bus en trein tot en met Brisbane centrum. Dat zou in Nederland ook handig zijn overal gewoon een kaartje kunnen kopen tot je eindstation of je nou met trein, bus of metro reist.
In de bus en trein vallen we de hele tijd in slaap, we zijn afgepeigerd na de nachtvlucht vanuit Maleisie met weinig slaap. We checken in bij het backpackershostel: Palace Backpackers. Ze hebben geen doubles meer dus we nemen een triple room en onze roomie heet Rachel. Zodra we de schone, witte lakens en zachte kussens zien zijn we verkocht en we zijn snel in dromenland. Na een paar uur worden we weer fris wakker en ontmoet ik onze roomie op de gang. Ze zit samen met haar nicht en twee vriendinnen op het dakterras te drinken en kletsen, als we zin hebben…? Dat hebben we wel en we volgen spoedig. Rachel is hier al twee weken, Jenny, Jasmyn en Sophie zijn er net een dag. We krijgen te horen wat we kunnen doen, wat zij hebben gedaan en waar de dichstbijzijnde supermarkt en slijterij is. We zetten voet naar de winkels om even een voorraadje in te slaan voor de avond en eten daarna lekker bij de grill&bar onder het hostel. De twee pints bij het eten hakken er al aardig in en dan hebben we de 2 liter doos witte wijn nog tegoed! Eenmaal op het dak breken we de doos en de zak aan en genieten met volle teugen. We proosten op Rosa, Kelly en Ruud (de jarigen) en op Australie. Ons feestje wordt nog even verstoord door een brandalarm dat afgaat en de daaropvolgende evacuatie maar als we terugkomen wordt het al gauw druk op het dak en is het feest compleet. De wijn gaat sneller op dan we voor mogelijk hielden en we zijn erg verheugd. De ene na de ander groep vergezeld ons aan de tafel en het is erg gezellig. Een groep Amerikanen gaat voor tienen naar de club ‘Family’ wij volgen zo spoedig mogelijk… Uiteindelijk vinden we de club een paar uur later maar staat er een hele lange rij. Daarnaast zijn we eigenlijk te ver heen om er nog wat van te maken. We gaan daarom terug en vallen als een blok in slaap.
De volgende ochtend blijven we lang liggen. Zolang we liggen gaat het goed maar als we gaan staan… :-s Martijn voelt zich na een ouderwetse maagleging een stukje beter. Rond 12 uur gaat Carolien douchen en die voelt zich nu ook goed in verticale stand. Ze stelt voor om te gaan ontbijten. Vol goede moed vertrekken we richting stad maar de geuren die we onderweg tegenkomen vallen verkeerd bij Martijn. Hij besluit toch nog even terug het bed in te duiken. Het is dus weer als vanouds :-).
Carolien gaat er daarom even alleen op uit om in de stad wat mooie plaatjes te schieten. Er moet toch een beetje geoefend worden! Het klimaat is hier super, het is niet heet, vochtig en benauwd. Het is zoals net voor de zomer in Nederland. Altijd lekker warm, zonnig en s’avonds misschien een vestje maar het hoeft niet.
Maandag 24 maart
Maandag gingen we ‘urban’ en verkende we lopend en via de ferry de stad. Op de ferry kwamen we twee groningers tegen. De oudste bleek al 50 jaar in Australie te wonen en hij vertelde dat de omgeving rond Brisbane vol natuurlijke grondstoffen zit en hierdoor het een enorme economische groei kent in de afgelopen jaren. Hij was in Brisbane om de zoon van zijn beste vriend (de andere groninger) de stad te laten zien. Deze jongen werkt als kok en is dit jaar uitgeroepen tot wereldkampioen snert koken, dat je het even weet. We zijn uiteraard meteen met hem op de foto geweest. Wij kennen een topsnertkoker uit Groningen maar een wereldkampioen hadden we nog nooit ontmoet (al denken we dat Teke een goede kans zou maken).
Na een leuk gesprek zijn we de ferry afgegaan en hebben we lekker in het park gelegen. We hadden wat groente en fruit meegenomen en hebben dat lekker opgepeuzeld. Om ons heen zaten grote en kleine groepen mensen te picnicken, voetballen of barbecuen. Vanwege het weer hebben de mensen hier een hele relaxte leefstijl. Er staan bijvoorbeeld overal openbare bbq’s. Je hoeft er geen geld in te gooien of wat dan ook, hij doet het gewoon en wordt elke dag schoongemaakt.
s’Avonds hebben we bij een Indier gegeten die diverse prijzen had gewonnen voor zijn curry’s: Sultan’s Kitchen. We hebben er de halve stad voor afgezocht maar het was het waard. De Indier verkocht geen dranken, maar je kon wel je eigen fles meenemen. Martijn had bij de plaatselijke ‘bottleshop’ (er wordt hier geen drank verkocht in de supermarkt, alleen door deze gespecialiseerde winkels) een lekkere fles shiraz uit 2004 gekocht en deze hebben we soldaat gemaakt bij onze maaltijd, heerlijk!
Dinsdag 25 maart
Op naar Cairns! Vroeg uitgecheckt en onder ons hostel hebben we lekker ontbeten. Hierna nog even een stokbrood gehaald om in het vliegtuig te beleggen. We beginnen het langzamerhand net zo gewoon te vinden om te vliegen als een bus te pakken. En aan het volle vliegtuig te zien denken de Australiers daar net zo over. We doden de te wachten tijd met het kijken naar Oprah en Dr.Phil ook hier hebben zij voet aan wal gezet.
Het vliegen ging voorspoedig, we vlogen langs de oostkust omhoog en zagen daarom tijdens de vluvht de mooiste plaatjes van het Great Barrier Reef. Binnen twee en een half uur stonden we in Cairns en namen de coach naar Port Douglas.
