Tijd voor een die-hard budget backpackersmentaliteit
Eenmaal in Port Douglas aangekomen hebben we eerst even wat fish & chips gegeten. Daarna zijn we op zoek gegaan naar een hostel. Dit bleek nog een uitdaging en terwijl we her en der vroegen naar het hostel werden we van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd. Na een paar keer heen en weer lopen in volle bepakking hadden we er genoeg van en gingen we op zoek naar een alternatief. Het werd de parrotfish, hier konden we vrij goedkoop bedden in een 8-persoons dorm krijgen dus we gingen ervoor. Het was een mooi, groot complex met keuken, wasmachines en zwembad.
Eenmaal in de kamer ontmoetten we Alison uit Amerika (20 minuten van New York) en later ook Karlie en Lauryn. Ze studeren tijdelijk in Sydney en waren even op vakantie in Port Douglas en Cairns. Na nog even boodschappen gedaan te hebben gingen we op tijd naar bed. Van slapen komt echter weinig totdat de rest er ook in ligt en je bent weer wakker als de eerste wakker wordt. Dat is het nadeel van een dormroom.
Port douglas is een wat meer upmarket plaatsje en dat is te merken aan het aantal luxe eettentjes, families en senioren die er rondlopen. Waar de jongeren (ja daar rekenen we onszelf nog steeds toe) tot nu toe steeds in de meerderheid waren, waren dat nu de middelbaren en senioren. Niet zoveel fun dus.
Woensdag 26 maart
De volgende dag gingen we uitzoeken hoeveel het zou kosten om vanaf hier het great barrier reef te besnorkelen. Dat viel even flink tegen, de prijzen waren vanaf 165 dollar per persoon, voor een day-trip. We besloten er nog maar even over na te denken en ons budget er nog eens op na te lopen. We hadden 75 euro p.p. P/dag bedacht maar met dit soort dure uitjes zou dat nog veel meer worden. Tijd voor bezinning! Na wat excel berekeningen waren we eruit: niet meer uit eten maar zelf koken, zoveel mogelijk in goedkopen dorms slapen, een goedkope buspas kopen en heel selectief zijn in onze activiteiten. Dat werd dus niet snorkelen voor 160 dollar pp vanuit Port Douglas maar misschien wel een tocht naar het reef vanuit Cairns. We besloten nog een dagje te blijven en dan richting Cairns te gaan. We deden boodschappen en kookten voor het eerst in 5(!) maanden weer een heerlijke maaltijd voor onszelf: pasta met een goedgevulde, verse groententomatensaus, heerlijk!
Donderdag 27 maart
De volgende ochtend lekker voor 5 dollar een alles-wat-je-kan-eten ontbijt genomen bij het hostel en daarna de shuttlebus naar Cairns. We waren de enige passagiers en de chauffeur vertelde ons alle wetenswaardigheden van de omgeving en zichzelf. Hij was een paar jaar gepensioneerd geweest maar verveelde zich zo dat hij maar weer is gaan werken. Hij heeft op een avond 120.000 dollar gewonnen in een casino en heeft daarmee zijn huis afbetaald. Af en toe probeerden we een vraag te stellen of commentaar te geven maar hij ging ongestoord verder (hij was een ‘beetje’ doof). Omdat we de enige passagiers waren kregen we de grand tour en stopte hij bij Rex lookout, dit is een supermooi uitzichtpunt. Na de nodige plaatjes geschoten te hebben vervolgden we onze reis naar Carravela, ons volgende onderkomen.
Bij het inchecken bleek er een gratis maaltijd bij de woolshed bij de kamer te zitten, dat scheelt weer. De double room was deze keer goed te betalen. Cairns is een bruisende stad aan de zee (hoewel je vanaf de esplanade wel ver moet turen om deze te zien). Langs de houten steiger/pier ligt een park met de bekende gratis bbq plekken. Aan het einde ligt de ‘lagoon’, een groot openbaar zwembad met uitgebreid grasveld en weer veel bbq’s. Openbaar zwembad betekent hier ook echt openbaar, geen hekken, geen entreegeld, maar wel lifeguards.
We gingen eerst even boodschappen doen en informatie inwinnen over de activiteiten die we de rest van de reis willen doen. Daarvoor gingen we langs Peterpans. We werden geholpen door Nathan een aardige Aussie met humor. Toen we naar buiten liepen hadden we alles geregeld: een toer met gidsen en overnachting op Frazer Island, een tocht met een zeiljacht rond de Whitsunday Islands, Surf camp van Byron Bay naar Sydney en onze buspas, allemaal binnen budget! Wij blij, Nathan blij.
Met wat boodschappen voor een lekkere lunch gingen we richting de lagoon. Daar hebben we heerlijk in het zonnetje op het gras gelegen. s’Avonds gingen we naar de woolshed om het diner te proberen. En raad eens wie we daar tegenkwamen: Alison, Karlie en Lauryn. Die waren net terug uit Port Douglas. We hebben gezellig samen gegeten en daarna was het Ladies night. Alle dames mochten gratis champagne drinken van 10 tot 11. Iedereen verzamelde zich al snel bij de baar waar twee topless mannen met strikjes het gouden vocht schonken. Martijn dronk een lekker biertje. Na elven hadden de meesten hem al goed zitten en klommen de eerste dansers op de tafels. Aangezien er geen dansvloer is in de bar, dienen de tafels voor dit doel. Om een uur of 12 hadden we het wel gezien. We spraken af om de volgende dag flink te gaan stappen en vertrokken.
Vrijdag 28 maart
Na een lange nacht slaap werden we wakker van geklop op de deur en de vraag of we nog een nacht bleven. Na dat we aangaven dat we inderdaad wilde blijven, werd door de schoonmaakster vriendelijk verzocht om dan wel even bij de receptie te betalen. Na een lekker muesli/yoghurt ontbijt uit onze koelkast gingen we richting Cairns centrum en zijn we langs Wicked campervans gegaan www.wickedcampervans.com.au . We hadden van te voren al wat research gedaan en deze organisatie kwam als goedkoopste uit de bus. De man in de shop (denk aan de manager van de Engelse serie The Office ) was erg behulpzaam en liet ons ook nog een campervan zien. We besloten om hier een camper te boeken voor Nieuw Zeeland (totaal 700 euro voor 26 dagen inclusief afkoop eigen risico). Kunnen we al rijdend de Kiwi experience ondergaan, we hebben er zin in!

Wat enig allemaal weer, en weet je wat ook zo leuk is? De plaatsen klinken zo bekend.
Volgens mij heeft Astrid die plaatsen ook bezocht. Het is net of ik er al een keer geweest ben.
Ha, kijk mij als wereldreiziger.
Ik heb wel één verzoek…..het duurt nog wel een tijdje maar ga alsjeblieft niet in het wild met die camper overnachten. Gewoon op een camping graag.
Het kadootje dat ik mocht uitpakken was helemaal leuk. Eigenlijk de tekst op het kaartje. Daarom zijn jullie zo blij. Jullie hadden het al voorzien.
Wij gaan vanavond aan de scampies, deze keer komen jullie er niet voor thuis. Grapje!
Ik ga ze nu in de marinade zetten.

In Nederland is de sneeuw weer weg en het zonnetje schijnt heerlijk!

Australië lijkt mij ook een heel mooi land, en de mensen zijn ook zo vriendelijke daar (no worries mate) netals in Nieuw Zeeland.
Hou wel rekening mee dat als jullie naar Nieuw Zeeland gaan dat de controle op het vliegveld ook erg streng is, netals in Australië. Etenswaren moet je zeker aangeven.

Gisteren zijn we weer terug gekomen van onze reis. Was erg leuk en het is jammer om weer terug te zijn. Leuk is wel dat we vanavond naar de house warming van Gertje gaan. Dus dat wordt wel gezellig.

Wat lekker dat jullie alle leuke activiteiten langs de oostkust hebben geboekt, Whitsundays,Frasier, echt super! Jullie gaan zo genieten!!! Gaan jullie ook nog naar Daintree. Is ook een aanrader hoor! Je moet alleen geen driedaagse tour naar Cape Tribulation boeken hoor! Zonde van je tijd en geld, in een dagtour kan je het prima beleven!
