Op zoek naar donzige, grijze billetjes…
Zondag 30 maart
Nadat we zaterdag ons verslapen hadden om naar het Great Barrier Reef te gaan (de telefoon ging weer eens niet af), ging Carolien naar de balie.
De jongen achter de receptie stelde ons gerust met de gebruikelijke ‘no worries’, we konden zondag gewoon een nieuwe poging wagen. Zaterdag hadden we onze voorzorgsmaatregelen genomen door een reiswekkert te kopen.
Vandaag werden we dus netjes wakker gemaakt door onze nieuwe reiskameraad. Op naar de boot, want we hadden er zin in! Na ons op de boot te hebben gemeld moest er, PADI stijl, een formulier worden ondertekend waarin we verklaarden met al de gevaren en risico’s die snorkelen met zich mee kan brengen het eens waren. Hup krabbel en blazen met die boot! Ahum.. de boot was niet snel en dansde ook nog eens flink op de golven. Carolien nam een gemberpil tegen de misselijkheid en Martijn besloot horizontaal te gaan op het bovendek. Onze tactiek werkte want we kwamen ongeschonden aan bij het GREAT BARRIER REEF! Inderdaad GREAT, want het reef is niet alleen groot in omvang (groter in oppervlakte dan Japan), het is ook nog eens een geweldige plek om te snorkelen. We waren verrast door de diverse soorten koraal en de grootsheid ervan. Onderwater wezen we elkaar dan ook constant op mooie stukken van het koraal en we doken vaak van de oppervlakte naar beneden om het koraal van dichterbij te bekijken. Snorkelen i.p.v. duiken bleek achteraf een goede keuze, want het koraal bevondt zich tussen de een en zes meter onder water, ging je verder dan werdt het blurry.
s’Avonds zijn we naar de Woolshed gegaan om onze gratis maaltijd te eten (deze keer opgewaardeerd met een salade) en om onze backpacks achter de bar te stallen. We namen namelijk de Greyhound nachtbus naar Townsville en vanaf daar wilden we met de ferry naar Magnetic Island. Om de tijd te doden besloten we om eerst een lekker ijsje te halen en dan onze spullen op te halen bij de woolshed en in de kroeg te gaan zitten. Het was een echte Italiaanse ijsboer, gespecialisseerd in mager ijs, met heerlijke smaken, we probeerden allebei eerst een aantal smaken voordat we onze keuze maakte. Hmmmm..heerlijk !! Carolien kon niet meer kiezen, zoveel lekkers! Uiteindelijk kozen we onze combi en smulde er heerlijk op los. In de Rattle ‘n hum bar hadden we lekker een bank voor onszelf. Daar dronken we een biertje en werkten ons reisschema verder uit.
We hadden geluk bij het indelen van de bus, want we kregen namelijk de invalideplekken aangewezen, kortom veel beenruimte. Zoals elke lange busreis, was ook deze erg vermoeiend.
Maandag 31 maart
Bij de pier stapten we met kleine oogjes op de ferry en kwamen we brak op Magnetic Island aan. Vanaf hier pakte we de bus naar Magnum Backpackersplace.
De receptie was nog gesloten, maar er stonden aan de overkant gelukkig enorme loungebanken (die hoorden bij de bar) waar we lekker neerploften en meteen in een diepe slaap terechtkwamen. Twee uur later werd Martijn wakker en checkte in. Carolien lag nog op de loungebank te slapen dus Martijn ging er gezellig naast liggen en viel weer lekker in slaap. Tegen de tijd dat Martijn weer wakker werd had Carolien een plannetje gemaakt om de mooiste plekjes van het eiland te bezoeken. Eerst nog even ontbijt halen en toen gingen we ervoor!
We bezochten lopend Alma bay en kregen een voorproefje van wat ons te wachten stond. Een prachtig klein strand omring door mooie rotspartijen. Vervolgens pakten we de bus naar Horseshoe bay en spotte een aantal papegaaien In de bomen die ons omringden. Na hier gechilld te hebben met het lezen van een boek (en natuurlijk fanatiek proberen die papagaaien goed op de kiek te krijgen) namen we de bus terug om halverwege de rit afgezet te worden om de the forts walk te lopen. Tijdens deze tocht staat het fort centraal wat gebouwd is ten tijde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Australie werd namelijk door Japan aangevallen (luchtaanvullen) en Magnetic Island speelde hierin een grote rol door de Japanse vliegtuigen als eerste te signaleren. Van het fort zelf was weinig over behalve een uitkijkpost op de top van de berg. Tijdens deze hike zagen we, naast een ontzettend mooi landschap, twee paar donzige, grijze billetjes in de bomen (koala’s!), oneindig veel mooie vlinders en als kers op de taart een prachtig uitzicht over het noordelijke deel van het eiland. De dag was geslaagd!
We waren te moe om picknick bay te bezoeken en besloten om boodschappen te doen bij Nellly bay (het punt waar de ferry aanmeert). Het werd een zoetzure rijstmaaltijd met sperziebonen en vlees. In de keuken was het behelpen met een 2 pits stroomstel en de rest van het hostel die deze ook wilde gebruiken, maar de maaltijd smaakte evengoed heerlijk. We waren nog moe van al het lopen en de nachtbus dus we lagen al snel in het stapelbed. In de dormroom zat ook een Nederlander, Frank. Hij kwam uit het zuiden des lands en had vijf maanden door Nieuw Zeeland gereisd en gaf ons hier en daar wat tips.
In de nacht werd Martijn nog wakker van het gesnurk van de bovenbuurvrouw (en nee, dat was niet Carolien). Het hield niet op waardoor Martijn de zool van zijn voet in het matras plaatste en het gesnurk pardoes verdween. Helaas was het van korte duur, waardoor het trucje een aantal keer herhaald moest worden. Je begrijpt dat snurkie de volgende dag als laatste wakker werd terwijl iedereen al gepikt en gedreven aan het ontbijt zat.
Dinsdag 1 april
Bij het ontbijt de volgende dag zagen we nog een wallabie (lijkt op een mini kangaroe). Nu hebben we bijna al de iconen van Australie gezien, behalve de grote kangaroo en de crocs, we zijn benieuwd of we die ook zomaar ergens zullen ‘tegenkomen’ 
Het reisschema is pittig en we moesten vandaag alweer de ferry naar het vaste land terugnemen. We pakten om 11.30 uur de bus naar Airlie beach, waar we vanaf hier, met de tweemaster genaamd New Horizon, naar de Whitsunday eilanden zouden varen. De busreis ging voorspoedig (deze keer slechts vijf uur) en we checkten in bij Magnums in Airlie beach. Het was een echte backpackers plek met een restaurant, disco en een cafe met veel rijen aan “drank” tafels. Dat beloofde wat!
Bij het reisbureau Peter Pan hadden we de trip naar de whitsundays nog even herbevestigd en zijn we ons to do lijstje gaan afwerken. De bedoeling was om zelf te koken deze dag, maar de keuken van Magnums was te slecht om ook maar enigszins wat op een maaltijd lijkt te fabriceren. We besloten om ouderwets voor een pizza te gaan en broodjes die we nog hadden op te eten.

Wàt heb ik nou weer verkeerd gedaan met mijn ‘piano’ vingers? Haal dat maar weg hoor.
In ieder geval weet ik dus niet meer wat ik ging schrijven, maar het zal gerust wel iets zijn geweest dan ik weer helemaal blij ben om de avonturen te kunnen lezen.
Dat vind ik namelijk erg prettig!! En het is echt weer meegenieten met al het plezier dat jullie beleven, zó leuk allemaal, helemaal enig!

Ik maak me alleen een beetje zorgen om jullie alcohol gebruik, ik lees alleen maar verhalen over bier, en pakken wijn. Jullie smsje was volgens mij ook niet helemaal in nuchtere toestand.
