Poor old Shanky ain’t what he used to be…
Het was woensdag 2 april, de dag van de tour! Twee dagen en twee nachten varen door de whitsundays, we hadden er zin in! Onze tassen sloegen we op bij Magnums en de spulletjes die we meenamen, moesten in plastic tassen vanwege het gevaar van bedbugs?! De tijd tussen het uitchecken en ons melden bij de haven, hadden we nuttig besteed door in het park bij de lagoon te chillen met Frank. Ondertussen zagen we nog een mooie papegaai. In de middag deden we onze boodschappen (wijn en bier) en melden we ons om drie uur in de haven.
De haven was afgeladen met jongeren die allemaal zin hadden in een supervette boottour. Natuurlijk gingen ze niet allemaal op de New Horizon en na het afvinken van de gasten bleek dat we ongeveer met dertig personen op de boot zaten. Inclusief drie Nederlandse meisjes: Floor, Nynke en Marleen. We kochten samen met hen een zak ijs om onze drank koud te houden. Deze moesten we, bij de boot aangkomen, als eerste inleveren en alles verdween in 2 algemene koelboxen achter op het dek. Het was met geen mogelijkheid meer te achterhalen welke drank van wie was dus het kwam op pure eerlijkheid aan.
Nadat de zeilen gehezen waren popte de eerste biertjes open en kregen we van een van de bemanningsleden een briefing over de do’s en dont’s tijdens deze trip. Het was een gemixt gezelschap van jong en oud en van allerlei nationaliteiten. Een groep Ieren leek het bierdrinken te hebben uitgevonden en hadden een flinke voorraad ingeslagen. De stellen kregen hun kamer eerst aangewezen, allemaal tweepersoons bedden en airco, relaxed! Alleen was het wel recht naast de motor (die normaal niet zo luidruchtig was). We deelden de kamer met twee andere stellen in de boot: Andy & Jane, Olly & Rachel en de Canadese Leslie en een van de Ieren. Al gauw begon het kennismaken terwijl de kok al een lekkere maaltijd aan het voorbreiden was: vis, mashed potato’s en coleslaw. Iedereen had ondertussen supertrek gekregen en dook op het eten wat in de kombuis werd opgedient. We bewonderden de eilanden en de omgeving. In de late avond keken we met z’n allen naar de sterren. Wat een tour en het mooiste moest nog komen! We gingen daarom niet al te laat naar bed om s’ochtends een van de mooiste stranden ter wereld (nummer drie in de top tien, zo werd ons verteld) fris te kunnen bewonderen.
Donderdag 3 april
De bemanning wekte ons voor het ontbijt en toen we uit het achterdek naar boven klommen, lag een van de vier Ieren brak en afgetakeld op het dek.
Hij had de ‘plaats van delict’ niet verlaten en hij lag naast een van de twee supergrote koelboxen die door hem en zijn kameraden die nacht flink was geleegd. Een snelle blik naar de koelbox en het slachtoffer leerde dat er een cauale relatie bestond tussen zijn lichamelijke staat en de koelbox. De Ier, uiteraard, ontkende elk verband met drank en gooide het op het eten. Zijn maten dachten er anders over en zongen de tekst: “Poor old shanky, Ain’t what he used to be, ain’t what he used to be!”. Hilariteit alom, de dag was goed begonnen!
We hadden ons ontbijt al snel op en gingen als eerste in de boot naar whitehaven beach. In alle haast waren we vergeten om onze slippers mee te nemen en Martijn moest het even later bezuren. Hij stootte z’n kleine teen aan aan een van de stenen op de weg naar het strand. Pijnlijk en behoorlijk gekneusd. Hopen dat het voor het surfkamp over is.
Omdat we de allereersten waren konden we een tijdje ongestoord van het uitzicht genieten en natuurlijk de nodige plaatje schieten. Het uitzicht was subliem en we hebben veel mooie foto’s gemaakt:
Half elf werden we weer opgepikt aan de andere kant van het eiland en hebben we een lekkere lunch op de boot gegeten. In de middag vaarden we verder en werden we afgezet bij een ander eiland om te gaan snorkelen langs prachtige stukken koraal en de mooiste vissen te spotten. Nynke ging voor het eerst snorkelen en dus gingen we met zijn drieen. Teruggekomen op het strand was het rolletje van haar onderwatercamera volgeschoten.
Voldaan kwamen we weer op de boot en zijn we aan de wijn gegaan. Rond zes uur stelde Sammy voor om de zonsondergang te gaan bekijken op het strand. We werden allemaal afgezet, wijn in de hand en genoten van de mooiste zonsondergang ooit! We hebben onze geheugenkaarten helemaal volgeschoten.
Na deze onvergetelijke ervaring hebben we heerlijk avondgegeten met spaghetti bolognaise en knoflookbrood. Later op de avond ging de bouwlamp op de kombuis aan en werden er restjes eten in het water gegooid. De kleine visjes komen op de restjes eten af, inktvissen komen op de kleine visjes af en de dolfijnen eten vervolgens de inktvissen. Ook waren er grey reef tip sharks te bewonderen die azen op de leftovers van de dolfijnen. Een kwam te dicht bij de dolfijn, waarop deze met een flinke klap met zijn vin de haai op zijn plek wees. Het was echt heel gaaf om voor het eerst dolfijnen van zo dichtbij te zien.
Na dit spektakel vondt er een drinking game plaats ‘the Horserace’ dat uiteraard door de Ieren werd geinitieerd. De uitleg volgt later. Nog even van de sterren genoten en toen, onder het genot van dronken gezang vanaf het dek, lekker pitten.
Vrijdag 4 april
Vandaag werden we weer vroeg gewekt door de bemanning om te ontbijten. Aan de voorkant van de boot lag een hoopje blauwe dekens. Niemand besteedde hier veel aandacht aan totdat een van de Franse meiden er met haar voet tegenaan porde en uitriep: “Hey, it’s a person”. Waarop het hoopje blauwe dekens antwoorde: “Bloody hell I am, fuckin leave me alon!” en deze keer kwam er een andere Ier brak uit de blauwe deken vandaan. Hilariteit alom, en ook deze dag was nog maar net begonnen. Je begrijpt het, zijn maten zongen de tekst: Poor old JQ, Ain’t what he used to be, ain’t what he used to be!”.
Ondanks de vroegte (8 uur) trokken we de nog vochtige wetsuits, tegen de gevaarlijke kwallen, weer aan om lekker te snorkelen. Het was een productieve tour want we spotten een jonge turtle en napoleon wrasse (baars). Die laatste is jong al erg groot, mooi en indrukwekkend maar kan nog veel groter groeien. Na het snorkelen werden de zeilen gehesen voor de terugreis. We spraken af om s’avonds te barbequen met onze kamergenoten, en wat andere mensen van de boot. Toen was het tas ophalen, inchecken en slapen want de motor van de boot was s’nachts niet stil geweest. Na het douchen ontmoetten we onze buurman uit California. Hij woont tijdelijk in Bali om daar duikles te geven en was even lekker op vakantie. Hij bood ons een koud biertje aan en wij zeiden geen nee. Na een tijdje kwam er nog een Australische dame bij die vertelde over een heftige zomer (het is nu herfst) met overstromingen waarbij haar huis gelukkig gespaard was gebleven.
We waren iets later en besloten daarom bij de subway onze bbq maaltijd te halen en natuurlijk een doos met wijn bij de drive-in(!) bottleshop. De bbq was al bijna afgelopen en na het uitwisselen van adressen en de laatste worstjes begonnen we met ‘The Horserace’ drinking game. Je hebt een dek kaarten nodig en het spel kan beginnen. Het gaat als volgt: maak een startlijn, leg de vier azen op een rij aan de startlijn, leg aan de linkerkant vijf kaarten op de kop neer. Om te winnen moet er zes keer de kaart getrokken worden die overeenkomt met de kleur van jouw aas (schoppen, ruiten, harten, klavers). De aas die heeft gewonnen ‘ontloopt’ de vijf kaarten aan de linkerkant. Heb je niet op de winnende aas gegokt dan kan het nog zuur voor je worden. Het begint met het geven van (vieze) namen aan de ‘renpaarden’ zodat je die uit volle borst kan uitroepen om hem/haar naar de finishlijn te krijgen. Zoals bij de echte paardenrace moet er natuurlijk ergens om gewed worden en dit is waar het drinken om de hoek komt kijken. Als de kaarten klaarliggen voor de race, kiest iedereen zijn renpaard en zet in. 4 slokken/ 8 slokken/ het hele flesje. Als het maar in slokken gedefinieerd kan worden. Als je wint kan je namelijk de dubbele hoeveelheid slokken uitdelen aan anderen maar (nu komt het) als je verliest loop je niet alleen de kans op de slokken die de winnaar je kan laten drinken maar als de kaart die aan de linkerkant van jouw aas ligt van dezelfde soort is moet iedereen die op dat paard gewed heeft het dubbele drinken van zijn inzet. Dat gaat dus erg hard. Na het inzetten en voordat er begonnen word wordt er een liedje ‘gezongen’ turuturu turuturu, turuturu turuturu, turuturu turuturu, tururuuuuuu tururuturu. En dan kan het los. Aan het einde hiervan (na ongeveer 5 rondes) was onze 2 liter(!) doos wijn op. We vertrokken naar magnums omdat we daar gratis jugs met sangria en bier zouden krijgen. Helaas was het na de eerste jug sangria al niet meer gratis omdat we laat waren. Dus nog twee gekocht maar niet voor er een goede korting op te onderhandelen. Je begrijpt dat we al gauw in verregaande staat van ontbinding raakten. Om 1 uur waren zowel het fototoestel als Carolien een keer op de grond gevallen en had Martijn een zeer verstandig voorstel ‘let’s call it a night’.
Zaterdag 5 april
Om 9 uur ging de wekker en werden we rustig wakker, we voelden ons redelijk maar eigenlijk waren we nog onder invloed. Het tas inpakken en aankleden verliep daarom hilarisch en de gesprekken waren erg lachwekkend omdat we er allebei niet helemaal uitkwamen wat we nu wilden zeggen. We lagen de hele tijd in een deuk om elkaar. Uitchecken om 10 uur lukte uiteindelijk gelukkig wel en Carolien nam een lekkere yoghurt met muesli als ontbijt terwijl Martijn eigenlijk wel naar de mac wilde. Uiteindelijk was de voor een persoon bedoelde portie van Carolien zo groot dat we er allebei goed van konden eten en was mac alweer vergeten. We kochten een 2 liter fles water en settelden ons bij de mooie lagoon van Arlie beach. Na drie asprines was Carolien eindelijk haar hoofdpijn de baas, Martijn had daarentegen een van zijn zeldzame momenten waarbij hij na het drinken van een nogal grote hoeveelheid alcohol zich prima hersteld voelde :-). Martijn haalde met alle plezier fish en chips tussen de middag en het hielp ons er weer bovenop. Laat in de middag liepen de andere slachtoffers van de avond langs de lagoon en leerden we dat de iedereen ontzettend brak was die ochtend maar dat de Ieren het (naar verwachting) bont hadden gemaakt door pas om half 7 in bed te liggen.
Om 20:05 vertrok onze bus naar Hervey bay. Een reis van 14 uur. We kochten nog wat voor onderweg en gingen weer naar de subway voor een stokbrood van een footlong, lekker en gezond. Die was ons de vorige avond namelijk goed bevallen. Na een tijdje wachten belde Arjan nog even om te weten hoe het ermee was. Superleuk om weer even zijn stem te horen. De reis was lang maar de bus behoorlijk leeg dus we konden allebei onze eigen tweezitter gebruiken om (te proberen) te pitten. Na alweer een film over de fantastic four (we hebben beiden films nu al minstens drie keer gezien) deden we een poging. Het lukte een paar uurtjes slaap te pakken en al gauw was het:
Zondag 6 april
Om 9:30 werden we afgezet bij het station van Hervey bay. Daar stonden een paar busjes van hostels. Na inventarisatie bleek Frazers coast backpackers zeer goede prijs/kwaliteit dus met dat busje gingen we mee. Inchecken was zo gebeurd en daarna relaxed met het gratis busje naar de supermarkt om ontbijt, lunch & diner te kopen. Verder een dagje van ontspanning gehouden met lezen, schrijven en relaxen. Onze trip naar Frazer bevestigd en de volgende rit op de greyhound geregeld.
