Fraser island is het grootste zandeiland ter wereld (ongeveer 185.000 hectare groot). Het gehele eiland bestaat uit zand en alle vegitatie groeit hier dus op. Er zijn maar drie kleine vulkanische ‘heuveltjes’ aan de oostzijde: Indian head, Middle rock en Waddy point. Dit is het enige steen op het eiland en wordt gezien als de geboorteplaats van Fraser eiland. Wetenschappers hebben vastgesteld dat op Fraser island meer zand aanwezig is dan in de Sahara! Want het gaat tot wel 600 meter diep.
Dinsdag 8 april
We werden met de 4X4, turbodiesel, SUPERPOWER en nog wat andere specificaties die deze bus had opgehaald (de buschaffeur Peter was er trots op en galmde het door de speakers).
Met deze superbolide zijn we wat andere tourgangers wezen ophalen, uiteindelijk bleken er acht van de dertig Nederlanders te zijn. We gingen met de bus de ferry op en werden op het strand afgezet. De SUPERPOWER bus bleek in zijn achilles geraakt: we hadden een lekke band. Gelukkig was Peter erg bedreven in de bandenwissel en zaten we binnen no time in de bus naar onze eerste bestemming. Onderweg reden we over de westkant van het eiland. Deze kant van het eiland is nog niet zo oud (slechts een aantal duizenden jaren) waardoor de voedingsstoffen uit de bodem nog niet zo zijn ontwikkeld als die van de andere kant van het eiland. De bomen komen hier dus niet hoger dan je schouder en het wordt dan ook wel het bonzai bos genoemd. We spotten hier onze eerste dingo, en hebben er ook een foto van kunnen maken: Onze eerste stop was het Yidney scrub bos, een subtropisch regenwoud. met hele hoge en aparte bomen: teatree (omringend water krijgt door deze boom een bruine ‘thee’ kleur), grastree, scribly gumtree (de mot van een larf eet uit de barst van deze boom waardoor het een ’scribly’ achterlaat, oftewel een krabbeltje). We waren inmiddels erg hongerig en gelukkig gingen we daarna al snel lunchen. Het was een heerlijk Australisch salade buffet. Op de weg terug naar onze bus, spotten we nog een golden orb spin. Op naar Eli’s creeck, dit is het riviertje dat uitmondt in de zee. Volgens Peter duurt het tweehonderd jaar voordat de regen die in het midden van het eiland valt, zijn weg vindt via eli’s creeck naar de zee. Hier was niet veel te zien, behalve weer een mooie golden orb spin:
We vroegen aan Peter of deze spin giftig was, en volgens Peter ‘only a little bit’ we leerden al snel dat ‘only a little bit’ in Australische termen betekend dat je er behoorlijk ziek van wordt. In de tweede wereldoorlog gebruikte de Australische luchtmacht dit luxe cruiseschip als oefentarget en gooide ze er bommen op. Tegenwoordig is het behoorlijk aan het wegroesten en is het moelijk voor te stellen dat dit een luxe cruiser was in de dezelfde categorie als de Titanic: 
Vanuit dit punt zijn we naar de Indian head (bergheuvel) gereden. Captain cook zag in 1770 een hoop aboriginals staan op deze rotspartij en dacht dat het indianen waren want hij had tot dan nog geen inheemse bevolking gespot. Ook wij spotten geen inheemse bevolking en ook geen haaien of dolfijnen. Volgens Peter bestond er namelijk een redelijke kans. Maar..het uitzicht was wel fantastisch:
Vanaf Indian head zijn we naar ons verblijf gereden. Onderweg zijn we nog gestopt op ’seventies’ mile beach. De snelweg van het eiland. Hier gaf Peter ons een les ‘kokkels’ vangen. Kokkels (schelpen) graven zich in het zand en laten hiermee een hoopje zand liggen, makkelijk te spotten dus. Al gauw hadden we er een hand vol. We liepen samen met Peter naar de zee en gooiden de kokkels in het water. Je ziet ze dan zichzelf weer ingraven, heel erg grappig! We hebben hiervan een filmpje gemaakt en zullen het proberen te posten. Na al die indrukken waren we moe en hadden we trek gekregen. Rond een uur of zes zaten we in het kamp en kregen we onze tent toegewezen. Het was een tent met houten vloer en heerlijk dubbel bed. Top! Het eten was ook heerlijk: barbequesteak en/of vis met salade. Woensdag 9 april
Het regende die nacht behoorlijk. En we waren blij dat we in een goede tent met houten vloer sliepen. We hadden zelfs dekens tegen de kou gekregen. S’ochtends lekker een warme douche en daarna aan een heerlijk ontbijt. Vandaag stonden lake Wabby, het regenwoud en lake McKenzie op het programma. Peter vertelde dat Lake wabby een meer is dat zalm, catfish en krefts schildpaddden huisvest. Lake McKenzie is zo zuiver (ph waarden zijn extreem laag) dat hier nauwelijks leven waar te nemen is. Vooral Lake McKenzie was erg mooi om te bezoeken omdat het water hier kristalhelder is. In de middag aten we in het regenwoud lekkere wraps en liepen we door het regenwoud richting de 4×4. Op het vasteland aangekomen liet Peter ons nog een aantal kangaroo’s zien op de terugweg. Hij zette ons netjes af bij ons guesthouse en bedankte hem vriendelijk voor de leuke tour. Op naar Byron Bay!
