Een week ‘urbannen’ in Sydney & Melbourne
Sydney: Vrijdag 18 april tot zondag 20 april
Na een welverdiende maar niet al te lange nachtrust gingen we vandaag de omgeving verkennen. We kwamen onderweg een aantal ‘Dan’s’ tegen en zij gaven ons een goede tip. Pak de lift in het megahoge Shangri La hotel en geniet van het schitterende uitzicht. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Onderweg scoorde Martijn nog een supermooie hoodie (vest met capuchon), die we nodig zullen hebben in Nieuw-Zeeland waar de temperaturen aanzienlijk lager zijn.
Het uitzicht vanaf verdieping 36 van het hotel was inderdaad adembenemend. De harbour bridge en Opera house waren in volle glorie te bewonderen.
Zaterdag 19 april
We moesten de bus richting Melbourne nog boeken maar wat bleek na wat gesnuffel op internet: een vliegticket was vrijwel even duur en 11,5 uur sneller! Meteen geboekt dus. Na het internetten liepen we Marius tegen het lijf en hij sloot zich graag bij ons aan voor sightseeing in de botanical gardens en het Opera house.
Onderweg wilde Martijn zijn horlogeband even laten wisselen, zodat hij straks langer plezier heeft van zijn leren bandje. De pin zat nogal vast en ze vroegen ons een uurtje later terug te komen. De botanical gardens waren een echt plaatje en een superrelaxte plaats om rond te hangen.
Eenmaal terug bij de horlogemaker bleek dat al het getimmer om de pin los te krijgen had geresulteert in het missen van een wijzer. Na allerlei mogelijke oplossingen door te spreken, wordt het door de horlogemaker gemaakt en naar huis opgestuurd.
We lieten ons niet uit het veld slaan en pakten de veerpont naar Manly beach. Het was bewolkt en fris, niet echt strandweer maar we wilden het toch even zien. Het was een leuk stadje met allemaal hippe tentjes en winkeltjes. Als je het stadje doorkruist kom je bij het strand dat direct aan de zee ligt. Er lagen veel surfers in het water, aangezien dit soort weer vaak samengaat met stevige golven. Na een stuk rondgewandeld te hebben begon het te regenen en gingen we weer terug. Tijdens de reis terug konden we nog een mooi plaatje van een mooi verlicht Opera house schieten.
Melbourne: Zondag 20 april t/m vrijdag 25 april
Nu zijn er heel wat gekke Engelse koloniale sporten (Commonwealth), in rugby bijvoorbeeld gaan ze voorwaarts door de bal achterwaarts te gooien en al de lelijke, dikke kerels met (te) strakke broekjes knuffelen elkaar met een hoop gegrom. Het spel cricket wordt doorgaans wel vijf dagen gespeeld en dan heeft er nog steeds niemand gewonnen, waarschijnlijk omdat beide teams dezelfde kleur dragen.
Een wedstrijd heeft vier kwarten (quarters) van 30 minuten en het gaat als volgt: de scheidsrechter stuitert de bal hard op het gras (en hij blijft deze moeilijke procedure oefenen voor kick-off en nog eens bij half-time) op de middenlijn. Vervolgens zijn er 20 ‘uitsmijters’ elkaar aan het aanvallen en missen allemaal de bal. Ze eindigen op het gras, rollend als varkens in de modder totdat een speler (een van de slimmere) uiteindelijk de bal te pakken krijgt en ermee wegrent, een aantal keer laat stuiteren en vervolgens de bal een machtige kick naar voren geeft. Vier of vijf gasten komen ontzettend hoog en een ervan vangt de bal. Ze komen allemaal terrecht in een grote verzameling van verkeerd gepropotioneerde spierbundels. Wanneer de spelers die zich nog kunnen bewegen, zichzelf van de stapel spierbundels afrollen, is er nog een man die de bal knuffelt alsof het een baby is. Hij krijgt een vrije trap, die hij uiteraard benut omdat de goal niet te missen is. Iedereen juigt en voor ongeveer twee en half uur is dit wat er gebeurt…helaas werd Melbourne zwaar ingemaakt waardoor de spanning ver te zoeken was. We vielen dan ook in het derde kwart in slaap en besloten om de trein naar de stad te pakken om een biertje op het terras te doen. Het werd een broodje en een fles water op een bankje, een nieuwe korte broek voor Carolien en daarna de trein naar het hostel. Lekker slapen!
De dag begon met St. Kilda verkennen en het innen van een voucher voor een gratis koffie :-). St. Kilda was voorheen een ruige buurt waar allerlei ongure gasten hun niet zo sjofele zaakjes deden. Inmiddels is het een superhippe wijk aan het strand, waar je alleen nog een aantal verdwaalde gekken en prostituees vindt. Een straat achter ons hostel lag Acland street, een superleuk straatje met allerlei gebaks-, koffie en kledingwinkeltjes. Hier hebben we lekker geshopt en slaagde Carolien voor een spijkerbroek (hoort bij de voorbereiding voor Nieuw Zeeland, waar het een stuk kouder en regenachtiger zal zijn :-). 
Dinsdag 22 april
Een goede dag voor sightseeing in het centrum van Melbourne, het weer was weer schitterend. Koele bries en felle zon. We begonnen met de grote Queen Victoria Markt. Waar we veel spullen herkenden uit Azie, uiteraard voor een veel hogere prijs. Daarna volgden we min of meer de walking tour door de stad, die een mengelmoes van oude gebouwen en fonkelnieuwe wolkenkrabbers is. Onderweg slaagde Martijn ook voor een spijkerbroek en kochten we allebei superhippe nieuwe schoenen. s’ Avonds gingen we naar het
Woensdag 23 april
Vandaag hebben we Chai latte ontdekt, thee met opgeklopte melk, honing en kaneel hmmm! Verder moesten we echt weer eens posten en foto’s branden. Dat nam uiteindelijk zoveel tijd in beslag dat we de gratis bbq van de peter pan voucher misten. Toen gingen we maar uit eten bij een tentje op acland street. Daar bestelde Martijn de Chicken Parma. Toen het gerecht gebracht werd was het even schrikken en twee keer slikken. Het was het grootste stuk vlees ooit: een kipschnitzel met ham en kaas erop gesmolten, die het hele bord bedekte en dat is niet overdreven! De sla en patat lagen er ergens onder verborgen…
Donderdag 24 april
Weer een postpakketje met wat souvenirs en dvd’s richting huis gestuurd. Daarna afgesproken met Hannah die we hadden ontmoet in Vietnam tijdens de vermaarde Mekong Delta tour. Maar eerst koffie met wat lekkers op acland street. Hannah trakteerde ons op een ijsje van haar favoriete ijsshop. Die hebben lekker opgepeuzeld aan St. Kilda beach. Hannah nam ons daarna op een tour naar het snobbistische Brighton die allemaal mooi beschilderde huisjes op het strand heeft staan. Vervolgens bezochten we nog een ouderwets, Engels Boat house in de suburbs waar we Hannah en onszelf trakteerden op een lekkere smoothie. Daarna was het tas inpakken en muesli met yoghurt & fruit als diner (beetje op het budget letten).
