Woensdag 7 mei Queenstown
Na een nachtelijke rit langs onder andere de remarkables (nee dit is geen tv serie of stel superhelden maar een gebergte waar je over 2 maanden prachtig kan skieen) kwamen we eindelijk aan in Queenstown. De benzinewijzer stond wederom onder E en ons geld en eten was op, dus we hadden onze prioriteiten. Eerst een pinautomaat zoeken, toen naar het dichtstbijzijnde tankstation en daarna boodschappen doen. Toen we eindelijk bij een camping aankwamen bleek deze zo duur te zijn dat we gauw op zoek gingen naar een andere. Het was half elf toen we ons diner opsmikkelden. De volgende dag hadden we maar een doel: jullie op de hoogte houden (en bankzaken regelen)! Dat nam het grootste deel van de dag in beslag. Voordat we echter achter de computer gingen zitten slenterden we wat rond in het stadje. Queenstown ligt in een vallei tussen allemaal prachtige bergpartijen in en je kan er alle extreme sporten doen die je maar kunt verzinnen en vaak gaan ze nog een stapje verder. Zoals bungyjumpen, dat hier is uitgevonden, maar dan niet van 50 meter of 100 maar van 152 meter! Moeders wees gerust we hebben onszelf niet van belachelijke hoogten laten vallen of gevaarlijke dingen gedaan. Na het internetten gingen we meteen door naar Arrowtown, een historisch mijnwerkersstadje, 19 km. verderop. Onder toeziend oog van een grumpy receptioniste checkten we 2 minuten voor sluitingstijd in bij de enige camping. Een zeer luxe deze keer met verwarmde keuken, tv en dan toch betaalde douches, beetje jammer. Arrowtown heeft ongeveer 1800 inwoners en een stadshart dat gedeeltelijk dateert uit de mijnwerkerstijd, toen hier goud gevonden en gedolven werd. Het is schattig maar komt ook een beetje nep over. Zoals Martijn treffend zei: ‘ik krijg een beetje een Zaanse Schans gevoel’. En dat klopt ook wel want het stadje verdient zijn geld aan toeristen. Ondanks dat is het toch schattig en zitten er ontzettend veel leuke tentjes en winkeltjes. Van de oudjes hadden we al gehoord dat de bioscoop een toppertje was waar je een lekker glas wijn bij de film kon drinken. We namen een kijkje en waren verrast door een bescheiden zaal met heerlijk brede stoelen met tafeltjes, we kochtend meteen kaartjes voor een Italiaanse film: My best enemy. Toen we s’avonds aankwamen brandde de open haard en bestelden we een kaasplankje voor in de pauze. De film was ontzettend leuk en lachen, als je van Italianen houdt zie je ze hier in topvorm. Het kaasplankje smaakte goed met een lekker glas wijn. De bioscoop ligt in een steegje met een aantal leuke restaurantjes. We liepen echter naar de camping met het voornemen zelf te koken. Onderweg kwamen we een kebabzaak tegen en eigenlijk hadden we geen zin om te koken. Als we toch buiten de ‘bus’ gingen eten konden we het beter goed doen. Al in een Italiaanse mood gingen we gauw terug het steegje in en aten daar bij Pesto. Hier hadden ze heel bijzonder Italiaans eten, Carolien had een pizza genaamd sunworshipper met geroosterde pompoen, zongedroogde tomaatjes, spinazie, pijnboompitten en roomkaas (loopt het water je al in de mond?) nooit eerder zoiets geproefd en een ware lekkernij! Na zo’n verwenavond (en een beetje hulp van de wijn) sliepen we als een roos.
Donderdag 8 mei
We wilden een beetje op tijd in Haast zijn, onze volgende bestemming, dus 7 uur op. Tijdens het ontbijt kwamen we erachter dat er, na dagen stralende zon, flink zou gaan regenen. En wanneer ze hier regen voorspellen is dat 100-125 mm op een dag. Dus dat beloofde wat. Vol goede moed vertrokken we en namen we de scenic route richting Wanaka. Nog even van het uitzicht genieten maar al gauw waren we in de bergen op wolkhoogte en konden de ruitenwissers aan. Die hadden op alle beschikbare snelheden gestaan tegen de tijd dat we aankwamen in Haast. We waren zo op tijd in Haast dat we besloten door te rijden naar de Frans Jozef gletsjer. Eerst nog even tanken want de scheetbus gast er aardig wat doorheen. Ook hier hebbben we last van stijgende olieprijzen, het is per liter al 15 cent duurder dan toen we begonnen. Als het goed is moet de prijs in het meer bevolkte noordereiland iets vriendelijker voor onze portomonnee zijn. Voordat we bij de Frans Jozef gletsjer kwamen gingen we nog even langs het punt dat over de Fox gletsjer uitkijkt. Het regende en het zicht was niet best maar het was toch een indrukwekkend gezicht. Foto. Dat beloofd wat voor de Frans Jozef gletsjer die we willen beklimmen.
Vrijdag 9 mei
Rustige dag gehad. Dvd gebrand en de gletjertocht geboekt.
Zaterdag 10 mei
Vanochtend zijn we vroeg opgestaan want we gingen de Frans Joseph gletsjer op! We hadden goed gegokt door tot vandaag te wachten, want toen we de deur van onze scheetbus opendeden (nee, er kwam geen walm uit) zagen we een strakblauwe lucht. Nadat de nodige gear was uitgedeeld door de touroperator gingen we de bus in naar de gletsjer. We werden afgezet en na een stukje lopen kwamen we bij de rivier die het water van de gletsjer afvloeit. De gletsjer zelf leek slechts 200 meter van ons vandaan, maar de gids vertelde dat je werd gefopt door de rotsen om ons heen en de gletsjer zelf. Het was namelijk 2 kilometer van ons vandaan en minstens een uur lopen. Onderweg liepen we en klommen we over rotsen heen. Voor een chinees stel was dit te veel en haakte af. Bij de volgende break (we hadden nu een goed zicht op de gletsjer) vertelde de gids dat er elke 250 jaar een grote aardbeving in Nieuw Zeeland zou moeten plaatsvinden (8.3/8.4 op de schaal van Richter}.Waarbij de aardplaten (volgens wetenschappers) 8 meter horizontaal en 2 meter verticaal zullen opschuiven. De eerste vraag die werd gesteld ging natuurlijk over het feit wanneer de laatste zware aardbeving had plaatsgevonden: in het jaar 1723. Yep, je hoeft geen rekenwonder te zijn om te constateren dat we groot gevaar lopen (aaah!). Voordat we de gletsjer opgingen deden we onze ‘ijzers’ aan. De groep werd onderverdeeld in twee groepen. Wij gingen met Johnatan mee een echte kiwi uit Dunedin. Hij had eerder in de ochtend met zijn pikhouweel trappen in het ijs gemaakt om het voor ons gemakkelijk te maken. Na een korte briefing ging John voorop met zijn pikhouweel en baande een weg voor ons. Steile klimstukken werden afgewisseld met witte ijsvlaktes. De lucht was nog steeds strakblauw en de zon kwam goed door. Het was heerlijk vertoeven op de gletsjer en absoluut niet koud. Onderweg kwamen we kloven, kleine stilstaande ‘watertjes’ en flinke ijsmuren tegen. Het ijs zelf was superblauw. We waren allebei behoorlijk onder de indruk en genoten volop! Op de terugweg liepen we zelfs door een van de kloven.
De guide vertelde dat Nieuw Zeeland 3200 gletsjers herbergt en dat de twee bekendste de Frans Jozef en de Fox gletsjer zijn. De reden waarom de Frans Jozef gletsjer zo bekend is komt door haar unieke kenmerken. Ze ligt namelijk op ongeveer 250 meter boven zeeniveau (extreem laag voor een gletsjer), er valt per jaar 45 meter sneeuw en de gletsjer verschuift gemiddeld 5 meter per jaar. Daarnaast ligt hij in een zeer warm klimaat en groeien er allemaal tropische? Bomen omheen. Na de gletsjertocht hebben we nog even bij de camping (illegaal want we waren al uitgecheckt) een omelet gemaakt en een douche genomen. Opgefrist zijn we via de westkust naar Greymouth gereden, en zijn daar voor het eerst gaan ‘wildslapen’. Daar kwam nog wel wat voorbereiding bij kijken. Nadat we een geschikt plekje hadden uitgezocht en de voedselvoorraad hadden aangevuld moest er eerst gegeten worden. Dat werd een makkelijke fish&chips in de auto op het uitverkoren plekje: een parkeerplaats voor een hostel. Inderdaad een prima plek dus en op naar het openbare toilet om tanden te poetsen en een laatste toiletstop. Voor eventuele nachtelijke nood hadden we onze voorzorgsmaatregelen getroffen. Martijn had een lege waterfles en Carolien natuurlijk de fameuze plaszak! Om negen uur lagen we al op een oor toen de telefoon ging: Arjan!
Zondag 11 mei
Vandaag hadden we een flinke reis voor de boeg, via de westkust door de bergen naar de oostkust, en we reden daarom al vroeg weg. De ideale plek bleek iets tegen te vallen en de nachtrust werd vaak verstoord door maniakken in veel te snelle auto’s (zo klonk het tenminste). De rit maakte het gelukkig meer dan goed. De zon was nog maar net op en overal hing mist met een misterieuze omgeving tot gevolg, schitterend! We kwamen veel landschappen tegen die gemakkelijk in de film ‘ The lord of the rings’ gefigureerd zouden kunnen hebben. Het was flink aanpoten voor onze bus met steile stukken de berg op en vele zigzag bochtjes maar uiteindelijk kwamen we netjes in de middag aan in Kaikoura. Onderweg stopten we nog bij Goose Bay. Carolien spotte een zeeleeuw in de zee en ging naar het strand toe om de zeeleeuw van dichterbij te bewonderen. De kust is vrij rotsig en toen ze dichterbij kwam hoorde ze een raar geluid. Ze keek opzij en schrok zich rot, nog geen drie meter van haar vandaan lag een zeeleeuw en gaf een teken van leven. Carolien maakte snel wat mooie foto’s en maakte zich toen uit de voeten!
