In de ban van de…. dolfijnen!
Onze eerste stop in Kaikoura was het informatiecentrum, dat ondanks dat het zondag was gelukkig open was. Een zeer aardige en behulpzame dame hielp ons en na alle informatie tot ons genomen te hebben gingen we het stadje in. We besloten eigenlijk meteen dat we sowieso met wilde dolfijnen wilden zwemmen. Deze eten s’avonds en komen gedurende de dag samen om te socialisen in ‘pods’. Deze pods kunnen gedurende de winter wel 800 dolfijnen bevatten, moet je je voorstellen dat je daartussen zwemt! Dat zagen we wel zitten dus we boekten een tour voor de volgende dag. Op dat moment was het bewolkt maar de vooruitzichten waren een stuk zonniger, zou het weer ons weer meezitten? Dat zou toch ontzettende mazzel zijn. We waren eigenlijk wel een beetje moe van de 370 km. rijden dus besloten de rest van de dag te chillen.
Daarna brachten we nog een bezoekje aan een zeehonden kolonie. Daar waren de zeehonden weer erg dichtbij en stonken ze nog erger dan de ergste fart die onze bus ooit zou kunnen laten ;-). De zee leek rustig en dat was een goed teken voor onze tour. We zouden namelijk pas op het laatste moment te horen krijgen of deze doorging of niet. We besloten dat we ook gewoon de Walvissen tour wilden doen. Dan ga je walvissen (spermwhales en als je mazzel hebt ook andere soorten, orka’s en dolfijnen) spotten vanuit een boot zo’n 8 km. uit de kust. Dus we boekten de tour bij het infocentrum.
Om 12:00 zaten we in het bij dolfin encounter behorende cafeetje aan de koffie. Toen het tijd was ging Carolien informeren bij de balie. Wat een teleurstelling, het zwemmen ging niet door! We boekten de tour voor de volgende dag en probeerden of we nu dan de walvissentour konden doen. Bij het centrum aangekomen bleek echter dat de zee erg wild was met een zeer grote kans op zeeziekte en een beperkte mogelijkheid om op de boot rond te lopen. Dat werd dus niks. De condities voor de volgende dag zagen er een stuk beter uit. Uiteindelijk kozen we ervoor deze tour de volgende dag in de middag te doen, na het dolfijnenzwemmen. Een volle dag maar wel een hele bijzondere, als alles doorgaat…
Na wederom een succesvolle nacht wildkamperen en voor het eerst koken op ons gasbrandertje.
Werden we uitgerust wakker met uitzicht op zee. De zon kwam net op en alle kleuren werden uit de kast getrokken voor een prachtig schouwspel van licht. We besloten dat dat een goed teken was en aten een lekker ontbijt in ons tot van bed tot zithoek omgetoverde campertje.
Al gauw moesten we ons klaarmaken om het water in te gaan. Met onze snorkels op namen we plaats op het achterdek. Een school van iets meer dan 100 Dusky dolfijnen zwom heel dichtbij en naderde de boot nieuwsgierig. Het water viel op zich mee en we waren zo excited dat we daar eigenlijk niet meer aan dachten. Nadat de toeter van de boot klonk gingen we er zo snel mogelijk in. Hap, hap, happen naar adem, want dat was inderdaad toch heel koud. Langzaam stroomde het pak vol met water en met het hoofd in het water gingen we ervoor: squieeck, ieuw, pieuuuuw, piiii, piiii, we probeerden zo dolfijn-achtig als mogelijk te klinken en te bewegen. Tot hilariteit van degenen die achterbleven op de boot.
Aan het einde van deze enerverende ochtend hoorden we de kapitein over de radio praten over orca’s die gespot waren… Die zouden we dan vast gaan opzoeken met de whale watching tour. Te gek! Na een warme douche en een snel broodje, gingen we meteen door naar het whale watch centrum. De vooruitzichten waren perfect, weinig golfslag en genoeg whales in het water. We kregen nog een filmpje te zien en werden weer in een bus geladen, deze keer verliep het zitten een stuk soepeler.
Daarna werd de eerste walvis gespot en de boot sjeesde erheen. Iedereen stond op om te gaan kijken maar hij had genoeg ademgehaald en dook net naar beneden. De volgende walvis was gespot dus: reeen jeee roooot! Iedereen moest zo snel mogelijk weer gaan zitten. Eenmaal aangekomen smeerde ook deze hem snel. Iedereen weer snel zitten! Ze hadden het beter whale chasing ipv whale watching kunnen noemen :-). De volgende bleef een stuk langer aan de oppervlakte en liet een prachtige staart zien bij zijn duik. Wat een gigantische beesten en prachtig gezicht. Bij de volgende stop ging de walvis net onder maar hij was zo kort boven geweest dat hij gauw weer boven werd verwacht. Na 10 minuten ronddoberen met prachtig uitzicht over Kaikoura en haar bergen op een superstille zee was het zover en er waren er zelfs 3! Dat was mazzel hebben. We volgden de walvis, die hoog de lucht in spoot totdat ook deze zijn mooie staart tegen een bergachtergrond liet zien.
Toen was het zsm weer zitten want we gingen naar de dolfijnen. De dusky dolfins zwommen een stukje met ons op en maakten zich daarna uit de vinnen. Dat had waarschijnlijk te maken met de volgende zeedieren waar we koers naar zetten: de orca’s. Die lieten alleen hun enorme rugvin zien en doken toen lang onder. Ze waren waarschijnlijk in jaagmodus. Onze tijd zat erop en de boot moest terug maar het was een topdag geweest met schitterend weer en bijzondere ontmoetingen. Dit zullen we niet gauw vergeten.

Nog 8 weken en dan sluiten wij elkaar weer in de armen en ben dan ontzettend benieuwd naar al jullie foto’s en nog meer mooie verhalen (maar dan live!!!!)
