Een warm welkom van de Mayor..
We hebben een goede vlucht gehad, goede zitplekken met veel beenruimte. Alleen het eten viel weer zwaar tegen. Die chinezen kunnen geen lekker vliegtuigvoedsel maken. Als dit maar geen voorbode is..
Aangekomen bij new siam 2 bleek deze vol te zitten, dan dus maar uitwijken naar new siam 3! Zelfde prijs, betere hotelkamer. Na even lekker slapen zijn we richting het fort gelopen. Deze ligt aan de rivier.
De voorbereidingen voor het Loy Krathong festival waren al in volle gang. Maar omdat we nog maar net wakker waren, ontging ons het meeste. Sterker nog, we hadden maar een doel en dat was een lekkere bak cappucino scoren bij onze favoriete coffeeshop (en nee, geen cafeinevrij!). Heerlijk zo’n cafeine stoot, langzaam aan kwamen we weer in de bewoonde wereld!
We besloten een tweede poging te wagen op het festival. Het zag geel van de mensen en straalde een en al gezelligheid uit met allemaal kraampjes en vooral veel locals.
Er was muziek voor de jongeren: Thaise rock en metal en vermaak voor de ouderen: traditionele Thaise dans. Bij de rivier stonden al een stel voorbeelden van schitterende en reusachtige krathongs met daarop duidelijke niet roken en niet drinken bordjes. Na navraag (helaas geen warner maar giechelende meisjes) bleek dit een traditie te zijn. Hiermee geef je aan puur te willen zijn of rein. Loy krathong is bedoeld om de verontschuldigingen aan de godin van het water aan te bieden omdat men deze vroeger overal voor gebruikte. Als je ongeluk hebt gehad stop je een stukje haar van jezelf erin, zodat het ongeluk van je weg kan drijven.
Na een tijd te hebben rondgedwaald in en rondom het park en mensen op een veldje ijverig bezig te hebben gezien met het maken van zo’n bootje, leek het ons ook erg leuk om te proberen ons eigen bootje te maken (kopen is wel erg makkelijk). Je moest je inschrijven en kon meedoen met twee categorieen: beautiful en creative. Tsja, het was de eerste keer dat we zo’n krathong gingen maken, dus dan maar een creative versie. Carolien zorgde voor de inschrijving en martijn verzamelde alvast de benodigde spulletjes: bamboe, bananenblad enz. Het maken van de bootjes was gratis en later bleek dat we zelfs een prijs konden winnen als we in de categorie creative als een van de winnaars uit de bus kwamen. Met deze informatie zijn we dus ijverig aan het werk gegaan…
Helaas werdt onze ijverigheid niet beloond, want het lukte voor geen meter om een kratong te fabriceren. Inmiddels hadden een aantal juryleden zich om ons tafeltje verzameld. Het duurde niet lang voordat ze in lachen uitbarsten. Het was wellicht zo aandoenlijk dat uiteindelijk twee juryleden ons kwamen helpen. Nooit gedacht dat we met twee thaise meisjes een kratong zouden fabriceren. Inmiddels was de lobby voor de hoofdprijs op volle toeren. Flink lachen om hun grappen (zijn aziaten ook heel goed in) en de nodige zelfspot ten toon stellen. Na de thaisnederlandse samenwerking was er zowaar binnen een half uur een kratong gefabriceert. En wat voor een! Een echte hollandse windmolen als thema. Want ondanks dat we 9000 kilometer verderop zijn, vergeten we natuurlijk niet dat we echte kaaskoppen zijn!
Onze creatie werd ten toon gesteld zodat alle juryleden er over konden gaan oordelen. Ons werd vriendelijk medegedeeld dat we over een uur terug konden komen om te kijken of we een prijs hadden gewonnen. Prima! We zijn even naar een optreden wezen kijken (thaise lenny kravitz) en kwamen een uurtje later terug.
Wat? Zijn we in de prijzen gevallen? Hoe bedoel je we zijn derde geworden? Er heerste vooral ongeloof in kamp holland. Nooit geweten dat lobbien zo effectief kon zijn! Ondertussen werd ons medegedeeld door een jurylid dat we hem moesten volgen naar het podium (huge!). Eenmaal aangekomen vertelde de jury dat we onze prijs, een plastic troffee en 2000 bath, op het podium kregen uitgereikt door de burgemeester van Bangkok. Bizar! We kregen als opdracht mee de burgemeester te begroeten met een buiging en vervolgens de prijs in ontvangst te nemen en af te sluiten met een buiging. We liepen het podium op en er ontstond iets magisch: luid applaus, kortstondige euforie, flitsende camera’s en een lachende burgemeester. Dit was het dan: onze one minute of fame. Deze sloten we af met een diepe buiging en een troffee rijker.
Twee uur later konden we dan eindelijk onze eigen kratong te water laten. Kaarsje en wierrook aan en gaan met die..kratong! Vijf tellen later was de kratong zinkende. Wat een topavond!
