Mongolisch karaoken met: Mr.Oke?Oke! Mr.Thumbs up! en Mr.Karaoke!
We zijn een goede vijf dagen verbleven in Hohhot, een stad ongeveer twee keer groter dan Amsterdam met haar inwoneraantal, buiten de yurt experience is er voor de rest niet veel noemenswaardig te melden behalve de avond dat we aan de overkant van ons hotel bij een grillstalletje wat besloten te gaan eten…
Bij het bestellen waren we zo goed als de enige die plaats namen aan een van de tafels. Al gauw stroomde de andere tafels vol en werden we vriendelijk begroet door een wat oudere heer die wat aan het brabbelen was, zijn vrouwelijke zakenpartner,vrouw of maitresse (kortom, het kon van alles zijn) kwam er ook bij en schenkte bier in onze glazen “Welcome to China” “Kampaiii”. We proosten erop los en even later werden we uitgenodigd om bij hun aan tafel plaats te nemen.
Het waren drie zakenmannen en een vrouw uit Mongolie en China die zich flink aan het bezatten waren. Ons bier werd weer bijgeschonken en we proostten erop los! Een van het gezelschap dacht Engels te praten. Zijn woorden waren in steeds anders terugkerende volgorde: Oke? Oke! Welcome to China, I love you en de worden cheers, yeah en allright!
De andere twee mannen spraken gewoon Chinees tegen ons waarop wij (met hilarische momenten tot gevolg) ze onderbraken door onze glazen te heffen en hard proost te roepen. Vervolgens stond de gehele tafel op en werd er flink geproost met de woorden Oke?Oke! Cheers en Hohotte! (uitgesproken als Goeheegotteee!) Na dit ongeveer twintig keer herhaald te hebben kwamen we niet meer bij en onze dronken gastheren hadden door dat de communicatie niet bepaald optimaal was. Mr Karaoke probeerde ons iets duidelijk te maken maar alles wat we ervan begrepen was dat ie misschien ontzettende trek had. Dit deed hij: met zijn hand naar zijn mond, mond wijd open en schudden met zijn hoofd…
Mr Karaoke haalde zijn telefoon te voorschijn en belde iemand die Engels sprak, vervolgens werd de telefoon op een van onze oren gedrukt en na een hoop geruis kwamen we erachter dat we werden uitgenodigd om te gaan karaoken!
We besloten om eerst onze rekening te betalen en nog wat bier op tafel te zetten om de stemming erin te houden. Toen het bier op tafel kwam was de oudste van het stel Mr Thumbs up! zeer beledigd door onze actie want het is een gewoonte dat een gast absoluut niet betaald en zich gewoon laat vullen met BIER. Oeps, foutje… gelukkig kon er wel geproost worden en al gauw zat de stemming er weer flink in!
We gingen met de oudste gastheer Mr Thumbs up! de taxi in naar de karaokebar en de anderen volgden in de taxi achter ons. Mr Thumbs up! Was al gauw in een zeer bedreven pleidooi met de taxichaffeur waarbij hij zowat op de stoel zat van de bestuurder en met minimaal 100 decibel zijn verhaal deed in het oor van de taxichaffeur. Af en toe onderbrak hij zijn pleidooi en keek achterom, deed zijn thumbs up en scandeerde Goeheegotteee!! Waarop wij onze duimen in de lucht staken en synchroon Goeheegotteee!! scandeerde door de taxi. Het was een dolle boel…
De taxichaffeur was dan ook zichtbaar blij toen we bij de karaokebar aankwamen en we onze avond gingen invullen met een hoop gezang..
Wij en Mr Thumbs up namen alvast plaats in de karaokebox en we werden bijgestaan door de ober.
Bij aankomst van Mr Oke?Oke! en Mr Karaoke werd de ober bij zijn nekvel gepakt en er vriendelijk uitgebonjourt. Het was duidelijk wie de gasten waren en wie niet…
Mr Oke?Oke! Had, na wat bleek, de hele avond op dit moment gewacht want hij pakte zelfverzekerd als eerste de microfoon. Mr Karaoke was zich aan het verdiepen in de muziekinstallatie en omdat enigszins lang begon te duren besloot Mr Oke?Oke! los te gaan. Theaaaaa!!!! Klonk het knetterhard door de galmende microfoon, Theaaaaa!!!! En dan heel zacht jaahhh….om het af te ronden.
Mongolisch karaoken blinkt dan ook niet uit in het serieuze werk, maar komt voornamelijk neer op een wedstrijdje wie kan het hardste door de galmende microfoon brullen, daarbij niet de tekst in ogenschouw nemen en wel ervoor zorgen dat het volume op maximaal staat. Inmiddels had Mr Karaoke het karaokedevice aan de praat weten te krijgen en beloonde zichzelf door een knetterscheet te laten en een dikke roggel in de hoek te plaatsen, zo! het karaokefeest kon beginnen..
Inmiddels kwam de uitgebonjourde ober terug de kamer in, deze keer met hoopjes bier en zette ze op tafel. Binnen no time waren ze open en proostten we er weer op los, het was een gezellige boel.
Na een hoop Mongolische liederen, waarbij we net zo hard hebben meegeschreeuwd als de fanatiekste van het stel hebben we onze gastheren en vrouw bedankt en werden we door een strompelende Mr Oke?Oke! naar buiten gebracht. Hangend over de leuning van de trap die wij afliepen riep hij ons nog na: I Love you! Wat hebben we gelachen..
De olympische vlam
We verlieten Hohhot op 8 juli. Toen we 6 dagen daarvoor de trein hadden genomen vanuit Zongwhei zaten er ook een aantal verkopers van vlaggetjes, T-shirts en ‘I love China’ stickers in de trein. In de dagen die hierop volgden werden de straten hiermee overspoeld en vonden de spullen gretig aftrek. De olympische vlam kwam eraan en de hele stad werd schoongeveegd. Overal ontstonden uit het niets prachtige bloembedden (gewoon door potjes bij elkaar te zetten) en om de zoveel meter werden grote abri’s met 3 verschillende prullebakken langs de weg geplaatst. Een actie waarvan wij denken dat het puur een poging tot imago verbetering is op tv.
De ochtend van ons vertrek was het dan zover. Een nieuwe westerling had in het hotel ingecheckt en wachtte op zijn guide. Hij vroeg ons waar we heen gingen nu de toorts er bijna was. Wij gingen er net als een hoop vlaggetjes en stickerverkopers net voor de heissa vandoor. Weer een olympische toorts net gemist. Om 20:00 kwamen we met de trein aan in Beijing en begonnen we aan de laatste week van onze 9 maanden lange reis zo ver weg.
